Description
Jackson State University, an NCAA Division I (FCS) member of the NCAA and Southwestern Athletic Conference and one of the leading institutions of higher education in the region is accepting applications for the position of Associate Athletic Director for Public Relations & Sports Media.
Examples of Duties
Specific duties and responsibilities associated with this position shall include, but are not limited to:
- Develop and implement a strategic communications plan that promotes the Jackson State Athletics brand.
- Enhance and maintain public relations initiatives that engage students, alumni, fans, and sponsors.
- Oversee the JSU Sports Network through the assistant athletic director of video services, video board content management, and leveraging the streaming platform.
- Produce and manage content on official Jackson State Athletics social media sites.
- Maintain statistical data and historical records for all sports.
- Hire and supervise clock operators, statisticians, student workers, public address announcers, etc., for selected sports.
- Produce game day programs and maintain the Athletics website.
- Establish and foster relationships with local sports reporters.
- Provide media passes and media seating for athletics events, upon request.
- Compile statistics and FAQs for all in-season sporting events.
- Supervise staff to provide game management for all sports.
- Serve as a member of the Division of Athletics senior leadership team.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
30% STRATEGIC ADVANCEMENT
- The Associate Athletic Director (AD) is responsible for assisting with the creation of all external communication to direct the advancement of the strategic mission for the department. This includes analyzing, implementing, and evaluating current and new strategies. Work with partners of new technologies and new media formats as they emerge. Effectively recommends appropriate direction and choices for the department. Works closely with the Universitys Communications Office to coordinate messaging for the department in concert with the university.
25% SUPERVISION AND LEADERSHIP
- Leads and supervises a group of full-time employees and interns/students. Plans, assigns, approves, coaches, and rewards the work of assigned employees. Has vision and the ability to implement a modern approach to communications. Responds to grievances and effectively hire and fire employees for the unit. Responsible for the annual evaluation of all assigned employees.
20% MEDIA RELATIONS
- Seeks and maintains professional relationships with all appropriate media outlets to maximize exposure for all sports within the department. Assists student-athletes in training for media interviews as needed. Assists other departmental personnel in dealing with the media. As appropriate and necessary, grants media personnel with access to assigned venues.
15% SPORTS COVERAGE
- Takes efforts to ensure adequate media coverage for all sports within the department. Serves as primary football communications staff member. Maintains awareness of student athletes academic and athletic performance in order to nominate for awards.
10% SOCIAL NETWORKING WEBSITES
- Provides clear direction/policy regarding the use of social media sites by all team accounts. Delegates the handling of all team accounts among their staff and tracks thatequitable coverage is being provided by each staff member, across all platforms.
Typical Qualifications
Bachelors Degree is required. Must have at least three (3) years of relevant experience on the D1 collegiate athletics level.
