Position Description

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking an Associate Civil Engineer Specialist (Field Work) to join SPUs Engineering and Technical Services Division (ETSD) in the corrosion protection group. This position will spend the majority of the time in the field adjusting and maintaining SPU's corrosion protection systems, performing soil corrosivity testing, cooperative testing with other agencies, and condition assessment of various infrastructure. This position will also maintain various databases and assist in the preparation of reports related to the field work.

Job Responsibilities

  • The primary duties of this position are to monitor, adjust, and maintain SPUs ~100 impressed current cathodic protection systems throughout King County as well as approximately 50 critical sacrificial cathodic protection systems to prevent corrosion of SPUs metallic assets.
  • Troubleshoot and coordinate repair of damaged or non-functional facilities.
  • Support CIP projects to replace or expand existing corrosion protection systems. Perform soil corrosivity tests for all Lines of Business and enter results in GIS for use by all CIP projects. Make corrosion protection recommendations based on field tests.
  • Perform annual Franchise required (SCL, City of Renton, ST) and cooperative PSE, Williams Pipeline, ST stray current testing.
  • Review 3rd party plans by the same agencies for impacts to SPUs systems.
  • Perform condition assessment of SPU pipelines, tanks, reservoirs including manned entry of large pipelines and tanks via small openings and/or ladders, CCTV inspection of drinking water pipelines, in situ condition assessment of pipelines, and destructive testing of failed pipeline specimens as well as associated reporting.

Qualifications

Experience: Two years of Civil Engineering or Construction Management office/field experience

Education: An Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or two years of college level coursework in engineering and construction technology

Experience/Education Equivalency: A combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class may be substituted for the required education or experience.

Special Conditions:

  • Must be willing to undertake field assignments that may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites as well as confined spaces.
  • Must be able to lift over 50 pounds. Must be able to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • Climbing 20-foot ladders.
  • Must be able to occasionally work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

You will be most successful in this role if you possess one or more of the following:

  • Minimum 2 years of utility design, construction, or maintenance experience.
  • Minimum 1 years of corrosion protection construction and/or maintenance experience.
  • Minimum 2yearsofexperienceworking with SPU, City of Seattle, and/or King County on infrastructure projects
  • Coatings application or inspection experience
  • Education or experience related to civil or electrical engineering.
  • Experience interpreting construction drawings, as-built sketches and other source document materials related to utility infrastructure.
  • Experience using ArcGIS or UtilView
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
  • Experience working independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience working outdoors sometimes in densely urban or very remote locations in all types of weather.
  • Proficient in MS Office programs.

Additional Information

The full salary range for this position is $53.60 - $62.40 hourly.
