Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose

The Associate Director for Military Affiliated Services and the Student Veteran Resource Center report to the Dean of Students. The mission of the Office of the Dean of Students is to engage students and families through a culture of care, using education, advocacy, support, and accountability, as they navigate the transformational Appalachian experience. The mission of Student Veteran Services is to promote and facilitate a seamless transition for veterans from military life to academic life and to support the academic success of student veterans through collaboration with campus partners while using best practices. It is the role of the Associate Director for Military Affiliated Services to promote and enhance the Student Veteran Center by strategically utilizing and evaluating the resources that support Student Veterans; to ensure their best possible education outcomes; to provide diverse programs; to inform policies based on research and best practices in the field, and to be a voice and advocate for the unique needs of Student Veterans and dependents at Appalachian State University.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree required.

Excellent interpersonal, intercultural, and written communication skills

Proven ability to work effectively with multiple constituencies and diverse populations

Demonstrated dedication to the Student Veteran population.

License/Certification Required Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Previous military service
  • Two years' experience working with Student Veterans or active-duty service personnel
  • Knowledge of Veterans' benefits programs
  • Knowledge of interaction of Veterans' education benefits and student financial aid
  • Knowledge of military registry transcript systems
  • Knowledge of private & public resources available for Veterans
  • Computer knowledge/utilization of Banner student system, DRUPL, SLATE
  • Organizational skills
  • Leadership skills that encourage personal growth and academic achievement
  • Creative approach to problem solving

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The mission of the Student Veteran Resource Center is to ensure Student Veterans' success both inside and outside of the classroom. As a nationally recognized Veteran-Friendly Campus, it is the purpose of the Associate Director to provide a seamless transition for student veterans into the University. This is to ensure their best possible educational outcomes, provide programs, and inform policies based on research and best practices in the field while being an advocate and voice for the unique needs of Student Veterans on the Appalachian campus. The Associate Director of Student Veteran Services reports to the Dean of Students.

Student Programming

  • Serve as the single point of contact for Student Veterans attending Appalachian's main campus and online education programs
  • Coordinate and manage program development, implementation, and outreach in an effort to create a seamless transition to the University for student veterans and increase their access, identification, retention, and success
  • Perform outreach to all student veterans offered admittance to Appalachian State (Operation Enrollment).
  • Provide support and direction to the Student Veterans Association as the Advisor
  • Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for student veterans within the Student Veteran Resource Center and the University community
  • Supervise, train, and manage Student Veteran work-study students within the Student Veteran Resource Center
  • Collaborate with Orientation to create orientation programming that is relevant and appropriate for Student Veterans, dependents, and their families
  • Develop and expand Student Veterans activities to facilitate the transition from the military to the campus and Boone community
  • Identify and organize workshop opportunities for Student Veterans as a result of needs assessments or self-identification
  • Assist the Admissions Office and Transfer Services with recruitment efforts for Student Veterans
  • Organize Veterans Week activities with on- and off-campus partners
  • Oversee the Student Veteran Peer Mentoring Program

Administration

  • Oversight of a comprehensive VA work-study program by directing and monitoring the selection, evaluation, and verification of student work-study eligibility in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) guidelines
  • Ensure the University is in compliance with state and federal regulations by maintaining current and thorough knowledge of Veterans Affairs policies and procedures
  • Oversee and assist with the administration of Veterans Affairs Education Benefits
  • Understand and advise the University on federal, state, and local laws and policies as they pertain to student veterans
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of academic programs and regulations at Appalachian State to assist in counseling prospective, incoming, and current Student Veterans
  • Assist in monitoring Student Veteran academic progress, course enrollment, and other reporting requirements in conjunction with the Registrar's Office, and serve as an Early Intervention Specialist for students showing signs of distress
  • Manage student veteran Midterm Grade Reports
  • Manage Student Veteran Services website and social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, RIPL)
  • Prepare and submit reports to the appropriate federal and state entities as required
  • Collaborate with Institutional Research and other campus entities on third-party surveys regarding Student Veterans and Military Affiliated Students
  • Manage all funds and resources relating to Student Veteran Services and the Student Veteran Resource Center

Outreach

  • Foster campus inclusion by helping to design and to implement awareness programs that articulate both the benefits of having Student Veterans on campus and the challenges of transitioning Student Veterans into the community, i.e., Green Zone Training
  • Serve as a liaison to campus departments to secure support and resources needed to successfully transition Student Veterans to campus
  • Advocate for Student Veteran concerns and provide assistance in resolving problems
  • Identify and develop active collaborations and partnerships with federal, state, and community agencies to augment the services provided by the University
  • Collaborate with campus partners including the MAC on official military-related events (i.e., Memorial Day Recognition, Heroes Day, Veterans Day, and others as assigned)
