Responsibilities:
- Primary role is to administer intake assessments and provide individual/group mental health counseling to medical students (which may include, identifying and managing personal issues that might affect their academic performance and interfere with their ability to focus on coursework, meet deadlines, or prepare adequately for exams.) Provide crisis intervention, triage appointments, and short-term therapy, as needed. This also includes hospitalizations and, at times, on call responsibilities.
- Maintain timely department documentation (progress notes, case management notes, monthly statistics, etc.)
- Contribute and assist the NYITCOM Director of Counseling and Wellness and Associate Director of Counseling and Wellness in planning and implementing programs, workshops, and events related to mental health topics and other topics of interest to medical students.
- Assist in outreach, promoting department programs, and sharing mental health and wellbeing information (via Instagram posts, creating fliers, displaying materials on department bulletin boards)
- Provide support and resources for faculty and staff regarding medical students of concern.
- Support Director of NYITCOM Counseling and Wellness in implementing counseling and wellness policies and procedures at the NYITCOM.
- Assist at NYITCOM Events (Orientations, White Coat Ceremony, Commencement Ceremony, etc.)
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Social Work or Mental Health Counseling is required
- Required field of expertise in Counseling
- Required Licensure(s): New York state Licensure in Mental Health Counseling (LMHC) or in Social Work (LCSW) is required
- 3 to 5 years directly related experience or five to eight years’ related experience
- Familiarity with therapy models and approaches that are appropriate for addressing a wide range of mental health concerns
- Excellent interpersonal, computer/technological (Microsoft Office products, electronic health record, and social media platforms ), organizational, oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate cultural competence and the ability to work with faculty, staff, and students from a wide range of diverse backgrounds.
- Must be available to work with a flexible schedule of day and evening hours
- Must be detailed oriented, self-motivated and able to work independently
