The Public Works Department, Land Development Division, is recruiting an Associate Engineer I/II to provide technical assistance and help ensure compliance with engineering standards and regulations. This position may be underfilled as an Assistant Engineer for candidates who meet the lower-level qualifications, with progression to the Associate I/II level upon successful completion of defined benchmarks.

This role offers work-life balance with a 4/10 schedule, giving you three-day weekends each week. Depending on departmental needs, your flex day will be either Monday or Friday, offering additional time to rest and recharge.
Salary: Associate Engineer II: $108,638.40 - $152,921.60
Associate Engineer I: $103,459.20 - $145,662.40
Assistant Engineer (Underfill): $89,356.80 - $125,840.00
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking a skilled
Associate Engineer I/II to join the Public Works Department. This professional position involves performing engineering work in the planning, design, and construction of municipal infrastructure projects. The Associate Engineer will assist with reviewing plans, specifications, and cost estimates; coordinating with contractors and agencies; and ensuring compliance with standards and regulations. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the City’s Land Development projects while gaining valuable experience.
Applicants who do not meet the Associate Engineer I/II qualifications may be considered for an underfill as Assistant Engineer, depending on experience. If hired at the Assistant Engineer level, the employee will perform similar duties under closer supervision, with opportunities for mentorship, training, and promotion to the Associate level upon successful demonstration of skills and performance. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Associate Engineer I/II- Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering, electrical engineering, or related field
- 3 years of progressively responsible engineering experience
- A valid and current E.I.T. certification issued by the State of California
Assistant Engineer- Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering, electrical engineering, or related field, OR equivalent work experience
- 1 year of progressively responsible engineering experience OR, equivalent related work experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:- Associate Engineer I: A valid and current E.I.T. certification issued by the State of California
- Associate Engineer II: A valid and current registration as a Professional Civil or Electrical Engineer with the State Licensing Board.
- A valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City’s vehicle insurance policy.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Associate Engineer II: Is the registered professional engineering-level in the engineering class series. Under direction, incumbents are responsible for performing a variety of public works engineering activities, including managing assigned projects, initiating communications and providing reliable information to engineering management regarding public works projects, compliance review, inspection and reviewing the work of design consultants and contractors to ensure that projects are completed on time within budget, and other duties as assigned.
Associate Engineer I: Is the journey-level, non-registered engineering class in the engineering class series. Under direction, incumbents are responsible for performing a variety of public works engineering activities, including initiating communications and providing reliable information to engineering management regarding public works projects, compliance review and inspection and reviewing the work of design consultants and contractors to ensure that projects are completed within budget and on time. Incumbents in this class shall promote automatically to Associate Engineer II once a professional engineering license is obtained.
Assistant Engineer:Assistant Engineer is the entry-level, non-registered engineering class in the professional engineering class series. Initially under direct supervision, an incumbent performs the more routine professional engineering assignments. With experience, the work becomes progressively more diversified and difficult and requires increasing independence.
Assistant Engineer is distinguished from Associate Engineer in that incumbents in the latter class perform a variety of routine to moderately difficult professional-level engineering work requiring an E.I.T. certificate.
