Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

Serves as Associate General Counsel for the University of South Carolina. Provides legal representation, advice and counsel to officials, administrators, academic units, and departments with the University. Oversees and directs complex subject areas within the Office of General Counsel. Represents the University in State and Federal courts, and in internal and external administrative hearings and proceedings.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Member in good standing with the South Carolina Bar.
  • Four or more years of job related experience.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 years of experience as practicing attorney.
  • Prior experience representing South Carolina State Government Agencies.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Superior organizational and communication skills (including both oral and written communications).
  • Sound analytical and research skills.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, judicial decisions and policies.
  • Knowledge of the laws of South Carolina.
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectively.
  • Strong inter-personal skills.

Job Duties

Job Duty

Serves as primary attorney to represent or advise officials, administrators, academic units and departments across the USC System of campuses. Within the Office of the General Counsel, oversees and is responsible for the efficient provision of legal advise and counsel in complex subject areas. Meet with USC officials, administrators and employees and issues legal opinions and memoranda.

Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 55 Job Duty

Drafts, negotiates, reviews and approves for signature by USC contracts and agreements to which USC is a party.

Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 20 Job Duty

In consultation with USC Communications, collects, reviews and redacts as necessary, documents responsive to Freedom of Information Act requests received by USC. Collects documents and responds to subpoenas received by USC.

Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 10 Job Duty

Represents USC in state and federal courts and before various internal and external administrative or regulatory bodies. Assists outside counsel assigned by USC's insurance liability carrier or otherwise engaged by the Office of General Counsel to represent USC in litigation or administrative hearings. Prepares or assists in the preparation of pleadings, discovery documents, position statements and briefs.

Serve as the Office of General Counsel's representative on various USC committees and work groups, as assigned by the General Counsel. Performs such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by General Counsel.
