Position Summary:

Drive innovation in additive manufacturing and materials science! The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) invites qualified applicants to apply for our Associate Materials Lab Engineer opening!

This position will support the day-to-day metallography laboratory (met lab) operations and assisting other researchers in understanding the materials science issues of advanced manufacturing for United States Air Force (USAF) sustainment activities. Technologies this position will be working on include laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), cold spray (CS), additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) and applied corrosion technologies. The primary job duties will be specimen preparation and characterization, operation of test equipment, incoming quality control inspection, assisting with metal powder inventory management, coordinating purchase orders and sample shipments, assisting in planning and conducting experiments, analysis and reporting efforts related to material/process risk assessments and selection, troubleshooting, process improvements, as well as structure-property and process-property relationships, and supporting senior materials engineers with other project activities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS degree in relevant engineering or science related field (such as materials, chemical, physics, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of mechanical test methods for materials
  • Working knowledge of a variety of manufacturing processes
  • Experience following laboratory safety protocols
  • Experience writing test plans, reports, or procedures
  • Proficiency with MS Office products including MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Team-oriented and collaborative mindset
  • Due to the requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be a U.S. citizen

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

  • MS degree in relevant engineering or science related field (such as materials, chemical, physics, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of additive manufacturing and/or other advanced manufacturing processes
  • Working knowledge of metal powder safety protocol
  • Directly related metallography experience
  • Direct experience with specimen preparation including polishing and etching
  • Working knowledge of metallurgy, microstructural evaluation, grain size analysis, porosity analysis, etc. via optical microscopy, XRD, SEM, or other methods
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience working under a certified quality system such as ISO 9001 or AS9100
  • Effective communication skills with team members at all levels
