Under the general guidance of the Dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, the Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science will be responsible for all the administrative and academic functions of the Department. The Department Chair teaches at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels, leads the faculty in continued curricular development across electrical engineering and computer science disciplines, engages in and promote active research and leads initiatives to strengthen academic programs, secure necessary funding, and maintain required accreditations.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This is a senior administrative and academic leadership position requiring significant experience to lead a combined Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The position requires the ability to manage multidisciplinary programs, support faculty across engineering and computing areas, oversee accreditation requirements for multiple degree programs, and guide strategic growth through faculty recruitment, research development, and industry engagement.

Essential Duties Summary

  • Assumes responsibility for the administrative and academic functions of the department; manages course assignments and enrollment; oversees departmental budget; and coordinates student advising.
  • Teaches undergraduate and/or graduate courses in Electrical Engineering and/or Computer Science.
  • Leads faculty in continued curriculum development, program assessment, student recruitment, and retention initiatives for engineering and computing programs.
  • Engages in and promotes active research, scholarship, and technology development; encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and industrial or governmental partnerships.
  • Leads accreditation activities, including continuous improvement, assessment, and reporting for applicable programs (e.g., ABET EAC and CAC).
  • Assumes responsibility for management and maintenance of all departmental records and preparation of reports in accordance with college procedures.
  • Obtains and/or manages extracurricular grants and contracts independently or in collaboration with departmental faculty.
  • Supervises, evaluates, and mentors faculty and staff; supports professional development and performance management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology.

Required:

Terminal Degree: An earned Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.

Rank: Candidates must typically hold the rank of Associate/Full Professor or be eligible for immediate appointment to that rank with tenure.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • ABET accreditation standards and the ability to lead the department through the continuous improvement and reporting cycles.
  • Basic office and financial processes and procedures.

Skill In:

  • Recruiting, mentoring, and evaluating faculty and staff, with a focus on career progression and conflict resolution.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making, multitasking, and time management.
  • Both verbal and written communication.

Ability to:

  • Assist the dean in supervising and directing the work activities of staff in departments, functional areas, or program.
  • Provide leadership and overall direction for faculty, staff, and academic programs.
  • Perform human resources-related responsibilities in accordance with university policies.

Work Experience

Required:

Faculty Background: At least six (6) years of experience as a tenure-track or tenured faculty member in electrical engineering, computer science, or a closely related discipline.

Scholarship: A distinguished record of internationally recognized research, evidenced by highimpact peer-reviewed publications and a consistent history of securing external funding (e.g., NSF, NASA, DoD, or industry grants).

Teaching: Evidence of effectiveness in teaching and mentoring at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Preferred:

  • Management Experience: Previous service as Department Chair/Associate Chair, Program Director, Center Director, or similar academic leadership role.
  • Accreditation: Knowledge of ABET accreditation standards for engineering and computing programs and experience leading assessment and continuous improvement processes.
  • Fiscal Responsibility: Experience in budget management, resource allocation, and strategic planning.
  • Personnel Management: Experience in recruiting, mentoring, and evaluating faculty and staff, with a focus on career progression and conflict resolution.
  • Industry Engagement: Experience developing partnerships with industry, government agencies, or research organizations.
