INTRODUCTION

Paws on the Plains Animal Urgent Care was designed to bridge the gap between traditional daytime general practice and high-cost 24/7 emergency centers. Operating out of a 3,500 sq ft freestanding facility, our business model is built entirely on referral integrity. We provide walk-in triage and efficient medical relief for non-life-threatening urgent cases. We do not offer wellness care, long-term chronic disease management, major surgeries, or overnight hospitalization. We act strictly as an extension of the local GP's office, transferring 100% of our cases back to their primary DVMs along with their medical records.

We are seeking an experienced, confident Associate Veterinarian to step into a key operational role alongside the co-founder and Medical Director. Because you will be managing shifts independently right out the gate, this position requires a clinician with strong diagnostic instincts who is comfortable running a floor solo. You will be supported by a highly leveraged technical team, maintaining a minimum 4-person floor crew at all times to maximize efficiency.

SCHEDULE

This position features a highly consistent shift structure:

  • Hours: 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
  • Rotation: Alternating 3-day and 4-day work weeks shared symmetrically with the medical director.

CLINICAL SCOPE

We know what we are, and more importantly, we know what we aren't. Our medical boundaries are explicit:

  • Outpatient Focus: We treat acute, non-life-threatening urgent conditions (e.g., ear infections, acute vomiting/diarrhea, toxin ingestions, minor traumas, urinary blockages).
  • Procedural Only:No major surgeries are performed in this facility (no splenectomies, GDVs, or pyometras). Clinical procedures are limited to minor soft-tissue repairs, abscess management, and laceration suturing.
  • Zero Hospitalization: We do not hospitalize patients overnight or manage long-term medical stays.
  • Built-in ER Safety Valve: Through our relationship with Auburn University CVM ER Services, true critical emergencies or patients requiring intensive, continuous overnight monitoring are stabilized and referred directly to their Level I facility.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Efficiently triage walk-in cases and provide compassionate, decisive medical care.
  • Guide technical staff on diagnostic collections, imaging, and treatment applications.
  • Efficiently complete and transfer comprehensive SOAP notes and diagnostic packages back to the primary DVM.
  • Maintain a collaborative, positive workplace culture.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) from an AVMA-accredited school.
  • Active Alabama state veterinary license.
  • Experience: Minimum of 1–2 years of autonomous clinical experience in high-volume General Practice or Emergency Medicine. You must possess the confidence to run a solo outpatient shift efficiently.

COMPENSATION

  • Production-Driven Earnings: Compensated at 22% of gross production (Targeted first-year average of $120,000 – $140,000+ with rapid upside potential as case volumes mature).
  • Continuing Education: Minimum $3,000 annual CE allowance plus dedicated time off.
  • Health & Wellness: Primary medical insurance is NOT provided however dental and vision insurance options are available. Short term disability and life insurance are included
  • Retirement: 401(k) program with employer matching.
