Job Summary:

The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) seeks an accomplished academic physician educator to serve as Associate Vice Chair for Education (AVC-E). This faculty leader will provide strategic leadership across the department's education mission, including undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, fellowship education, educational tools such as simulation and artificial intelligence (AI), continuing professional development, and faculty development of educators.

The AVC-E will help set the Department''s education strategy and will be accountable for translating that strategy into execution. The AVC-E will prioritize sustainable programs, develop future education leaders, drive innovation, and use data to measure progress and guide investment across the education mission, all aligned with the CU SOM educational goals.

Near-term Departmental priorities for the AVC-E include elevating the metrics of success for our UME program and ensuring successful transitions/filling of Residency leadership roles.

Additional attributes of a successful candidate are being a collaborative, visible leader with situational awareness who builds effective partnerships across the Department, the School of Medicine, affiliated clinical sites, and relevant regional and national organizations.

The AVC-E will directly report to the Vice Chair of Academic Affairs. The AVC-E will partner with, and be mentored by, the Department Chair and other DEM executive leaders.

Key Responsibilities:

Contribute to DEM Education strategy to become a best-in-class department and sustain the gains; take a leading role with department leaders to form tactics and accountability metrics; and envision the future of education with key partners both in and outside of CU:

• Provide input into strategic leadership for the Department's education portfolio and translate Departmental priorities into measurable educational goals, initiatives, and outcomes.
• Promote effective apportionment of education resources, and advise on optimization strategies for faculty effort, staff support, workspace, technology, and program budgets, in partnership with departmental leadership.
• Leverage department faculty to make educational programs sustainable, both financially and organizationally by: assessing current market forces for such programs, i.e. supply and demand; developing clear operating and financial models; identifying appropriate institutional, philanthropic, grant, industry, and other external support; and aligning faculty effort, staff support, technology, space, and program budgets with strategic priorities.
• Advance a culture of educational scholarship by fostering collaborative projects, presentations, publications, grant submissions, and dissemination of innovative practices, with particular attention to outputs that align with SOM priorities.
• Champion curriculum innovation, competency-based education, simulation, assessment, feedback, program evaluation, and fluency and/or thoughtful use of novel and developing educational technologies.
• Identify, test, implement, and evaluate new approaches to education, including AI, digital learning, simulation, novel assessment methods, and emerging technologies. Plan how to scale approaches that improve learner outcomes, faculty efficiency, or program performance. Utilize the "fail fast" approach to small trials of new ideas, evaluation, and adaption/adoption/rejection of the plan.
• Assess the Department''s educational capabilities and build the faculty, leadership, and staff needed for future success through recruitment, mentorship, faculty development, succession planning, and strategic partnerships.
• Develop future education leaders and create succession plans for major educational programs to reduce dependence on individual leaders and strengthen long-term continuity.
• Evaluate the Department''s education portfolio and recommend where to invest, grow, redesign, consolidate, or stop activities based on strategic value, educational impact, available resources, and sustainability.

UME program Top Quartile in SOM on Education Metrics:

• Use relevant data and stakeholder feedback to assess UME Program's performance, identify opportunities, and communicate progress to Department leadership and education stakeholders.
• Identify key metrics for the SOM educational mission, with respect to learners and as faculty educators for the department.

Develop and Implement, with input and support of key Departmental leaders, a Transition Plan for Residency Program Leadership:

• Provide strategic oversight and leadership for the development, implementation, and sustainability of residency program leadership structure.
• In partnership with key constituents, develop and execute a comprehensive succession and transition plan for residency program leadership that ensures continuity, operational excellence, and alignment with departmental and institutional educational priorities.
• Support accreditation readiness and ongoing compliance with applicable institutional and national education requirements in collaboration with program directors, coordinators, and institutional offices.
• Develop, mentor, and support Associate Program Directors (APDs)and future Program Directors (PD) while creating a robust leadership pipeline for future educational leaders.
• Lead educational innovation and operational excellence through the strategic adoption of emerging technologies and data-driven solutions to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, and scalability of the department''s education mission.

Represent the educational mission as a Subject Matter Expert to the Department's leadership team, including the Chair and Vice Chairs. Mentor clinical educators, formally in Affinity Groups and informally as a resource to fellowship programs and to faculty who are continuing their education in bedside teaching, educational scholarship, and technological innovation.

• Represent the education mission on departmental leadership and executive committees and serve as a liaison with School of Medicine, health-system, and clinical partner leadership, as needed for professional development in collaboration with Department leadership.
• Maintain an active clinical presence and participate in teaching and service responsibilities consistent with Departmental expectations and the selected faculty track.

Translate educational strategy into execution by establishing clear priorities, accountable leaders, timelines, resource requirements, and measurable outcomes. Drive initiatives from concept through implementation and assess whether they achieve the intended impact.

• Identify barriers to execution, make timely decisions within the scope of the role, and escalate issues requiring Department or institutional action.

Work Location:

Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• MD or DO degree, or equivalent medical degree, from an accredited institution.
• Board certification in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine.
• Eligibility for an unrestricted Colorado medical license and clinical privileges at applicable affiliate sites.
• Current academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, or qualifications sufficient for appointment at one of these ranks, at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
• Demonstrated leadership experience in medical education, such as service as a residency program director, associate program director, clerkship director, fellowship director, simulation director, or comparable education leadership role.
• Demonstrated record of effective teaching, mentorship, program development, and educational administration.
• Established record of education scholarship, quality improvement, or other academic contributions relevant to medical education.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced degree or formal training in medical education, health professions education, leadership, or a related field.
• Experience with novel methods and tools for technological innovation in education;
• Experience with data-driven approaches to innovation and milestone tracking
• Experience leading education programs across undergraduate, graduate, fellowship, and faculty development domains.
• Experience with accreditation, program review, competency-based education, assessment, simulation, and continuous quality improvement.
• National or regional recognition in emergency medicine education, including leadership or service in relevant professional organizations.
• Record of peer-reviewed education scholarship, extramural funding, multi-institutional collaboration, or national curriculum development.
• Experience managing faculty effort, staff resources, program budgets, and competing priorities in a complex academic health systems
• Experience developing sustainable education programs, including budgeting, resource allocation, grants, philanthropy, partnerships, or other sources of program support.
• Experience in pedagogical innovation through novel and emerging technologies [ex: digital education; artificial intelligence; augmented reality/virtual reality simulation]
