Job Description Summary
The Associate Vice President (AVP), Physician Practice Administration is responsible for the strategic leadership, operational integration, and oversight of physician practice administrative functions across the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (SRAlab) system of care, including the flagship hospital, outpatient and DayRehab practices, and strategic alliance sites. Reporting to the Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer, the AVP ensures physician practice strategy, operations, and administrative functions align with organizational priorities, financial stewardship, regulatory requirements, and standards for patient safety, quality, and operational excellence. Clinical Governance & Strategy
Under the guidance of the SVP and Chief Clinical Officer, lead development and execution of strategic and operational plan for physician and advanced practice provider (APP) services that support organizational priorities, growth initiatives, and clinical excellence across the system of care.
Partner with physician leadership to support development and implementation of clinical policies, operational standards, and evidence-based practices that promote consistent, high-quality care delivery across the SRAlab system of care.
Advise executive leadership regarding healthcare trends, physician practice strategy, operational risks, reimbursement changes, and legislative or regulatory developments impacting rehabilitation medicine and physician practice operations.
Physician Practice Management
Provide executive oversight of the annual operating budget for the physician practice operations across the system of care and participate in strategic capital planning initiatives.
Ensure effective allocation of financial resources to support physician practice growth, clinical excellence, patient access, provider productivity, and operational efficiency.
Provide leadership and oversight to physician practice administrative teams, including administrative coordinators, charge entry personnel, and credentialing staff.
Lead operational improvement initiatives focused on physician practice efficiency, patient access, workflow optimization, throughput, and financial performanceacross the system of care.
In collaboration with research administration, oversee administrative coordination related to academic, research, and compensation activities involving physicians and APPs.
Partner with executive leadership, finance, and human resources to support physician and APP compensation strategy, incentive plan administration, and market competitiveness initiatives.
Lead administrative coordination and operational support related to physician agreements, external contracts, and vendor partnerships in collaboration with the Office of the General Counsel.
Provide executive oversight of physician and APP recruitment, onboarding, retention, and workforce planning initiatives in partnership with physician and organizational leadership.
Quality, Safety, and Compliance
Promote physician and APP engagement in quality improvement, patient safety, patient experience, and operational excellence initiatives.
Under the guidance of the Associate Chief Medical Officer, oversee organizational readiness and preparation for accreditation and regulatory surveys related to physician practice operations and medical staff compliance.
Ensure physician practice operations comply with applicable regulatory, accreditation, compliance, and organizational standards.
Executive Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement
Regularly engage with the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) to provide strategic updates regarding physician practice performance, operational risks, growth opportunities, industry trends, and regulatory developments impacting rehabilitation medicine.
Develop and maintain strategic relationships with physician leaders, academic partners, alliance stakeholders, and relevant professional organizations to advance operational excellence and physician practice initiatives.
Prepare executive-level reports, dashboards, analyses, and strategic updates for executive leadership and governing bodies regarding physician practice performance and initiatives.
Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.
Reporting Relationships
Reports directly to the Senior Vice President, Chief Clinical Officer.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
Master’s degree in healthcare administration or related field required.
Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible leadership experience in physician practice administration within an academic medical center, hospital, or complex healthcare system.
Executive-level communication and influencing skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
Advanced analytical and data interpretation capabilities; experience translating complex data into actionable strategies.
Proficiency in performance analytics tools and reporting platforms.
Demonstrated experience leading complex operational improvement initiatives and physician practice transformation efforts within a matrixed healthcare environment.
Experience partnering with physician leadership on compensation strategy, provider productivity, ambulatory operations, and workforce planning preferred.
Strong knowledge of healthcare regulatory requirements, physician practice operations, provider compensation models, and ambulatory practice management.
Working Conditions
Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
