Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences - Neuroscience

The Department of Biological Sciences at Ohio Wesleyan University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in Neuroscience (OWU Neuroscience Program) starting in August 2027. We are seeking candidates committed to excellent undergraduate teaching and to developing a vibrant research program that involves undergraduates of all experience levels and backgrounds. We are especially interested in candidates with research experience in neurobiology. The successful candidate will join a departmental and interdisciplinary community with a wide range of research and teaching interests and will benefit from extensive support for junior faculty, including access to the Smith Center for Faculty Excellence, start-up funding, pre-tenure research leave, funding for student-faculty research collaboration via the Summer Scholarship and Research Program and The OWU Connection, and a range of workshops and mentoring programs.

This job is part of a cluster of positions focused on flexibility, interdisciplinarity, and inclusivity. The faculty cohort will join an educational community that values interdisciplinarity and fosters close working relationships with students through our signature program in experiential learning, the OWU Connection. Incoming faculty will be provided with mentoring, professional development, funds, and opportunities to connect with faculty across the Ohio 5 and GLCA consortia. Responsibilities

• Teaching three to four courses (9 to 12 contact hours) a semester

• Teaching Introduction to Neuroscience (NEUR 110), Topics in Neuroscience (NEUR 374), Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience (NEUR 362), and contributing to the required Introduction to Cell Biology (BIOL 120)

• Contribute to teaching one or more of the following: Human Physiology (BIOL 325), Genetics (BIOL 271), or Cell and Molecular Biology (BIOL 351)

• Advising students in their academic journey

• Engaging in a consistent and focused line of research in neurobiology

• Providing service to the department, university, and profession

• Assisting in curriculum development, revision, and evaluation

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Neuroscience or a related discipline

• Evidence of preparation for teaching at the undergraduate level

• A research program in neurobiology or related discipline

In your response, address your ability to teach a broad range of courses and to employ pedagogical approaches that support students with varied perspectives and experiences. Include examples of outreach, advising, or program activities that have supported students whose pathways into the discipline may not follow a traditional trajectory.

• Research statement (2-page limit): a statement outlining the central aims of the research program you would like to develop and how it will thrive at Ohio Wesleyan. If you intend to use an animal model, please describe the housing facilities and support staff that you anticipate needing to conduct your research on campus.
