Job Summary
This position serves as an academic counselor offering academic support services to student-athletes.
Duties and Responsibilities
This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Athletic Academics, and the Director of Athletic Academics.
The duties and responsibilities for this position include:
Maintaining the highest standard of integrity through compliance with all University, Sun Belt Conference and NCAA rules and regulations
Responsible for identifying and addressing the academic needs of student-athletes in the sports assigned, by providing, or arranging for the provision of, academic support services
Maintaining accurate and complete records on assigned student-athletes
Monitoring the academic progress of student-athletes throughout the academic year, to include:
Providing academic counseling assistance in the areas of course selection and registration for student-athletes assigned to this position
Monitoring and approving classes to be added/dropped by assigned student-athletes, including counseling students about such matters
Reviewing and approving curriculum/major changes processed by assigned student athletes, including counseling students about such matters
Assisting student-athletes to understand the nature and purpose of a University education and guide student-athletes toward individual responsibility, to include directing the student-athlete to:
Become familiar with University policies, registration procedures and regulations
Utilize all of the Universitys resources
Obtain information about numerous academic programs available
Assume responsibility for planning and monitoring his or her academic progress
Develop a sense of belonging within the University
Communicating regularly with the Interim Director of the Student Success Center, Coordinator of Academic Counseling, the Assistant Director of Athletics for Academic and Compliance, and the Head Coach (or designee) regarding academic programming and the academic and eligibility status of assigned student-athletes
Communicating with advisors and faculty as needed in order to provide appropriate support to student-athletes
Reviewing academic credentials of prospective student-athletes and providing recommendations to the coaching staff
Meeting with prospective student-athletes, parents and others during regular office hours and occasional weekends during heavy recruiting periods
Coordinate the NCAA Academic Performance Program
Other duties include:
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field is required, Master's degree in a related field is preferred. Professional experience in intercollegiate athletics is desirable, direct experience with academic counseling is ideal. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to work occasional nights and weekends is required.
