Position Title: Volunteer Coach FLSA Status: Volunteer (Non-Exempt)
Responsible to: Athletic Director/Activities Sponsor or Head Coach Supervises: Student Athletes
Evaluated by: Athletic Director/Activities Sponsor or Head Coach
Terms of Service: Seasonally based on the sport and school needs.
Evaluation Period:
- Formative: Ongoing feedback throughout the season as per school athletic department guidelines.
Purpose of the Position:
To mentor and guide student-athletes in their personal and athletic development, fostering teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship in accordance with school values.
Minimum Requirements:
The following are the qualifications and minimum requirements necessary for a person to perform this role:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Experience in coaching or playing the sport is preferred.
- Appropriate athletic safety certifications
Essential Functions of the Position:
The following functions are essential to the successful performance of this volunteer role:
- Plan and conduct practice sessions in line with the head coach's strategy and goals.
- Instruct and mentor student-athletes on proper techniques, strategies, and sportsmanship.
- Monitor and assess the progress of student-athletes, providing feedback and guidance.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all student-athletes during practices, games, and events.
- Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, and school staff regarding schedules, expectations, and athlete progress.
- Assist in organizing and managing equipment, uniforms, and other resources needed for the sport.
- Support the head coach in game preparation, including developing strategies and scouting opponents.
Secondary Functions of the Position:
The following functions, while important and necessary, are secondary to the successful performance of this position:
- Participate in team meetings, parent meetings, and other related activities.
- Assist in fundraising, community outreach, and other team-related events as needed.
- Perform additional duties as directed by the Athletic Director or Head Coach.
Knowledge of:
- Basic principles of coaching, including safety, sportsmanship, and skill development.
- School and athletic department policies and procedures.
- Applicable sports regulations and rules.
Ability to:
- Inspire and motivate student-athletes to reach their full potential.
- Plan, organize, and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Use independent judgment and initiative in developing coaching strategies.
- Handle sensitive matters with discretion and professionalism.
- Respond tactfully to inquiries or concerns from parents, athletes, and staff.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with athletes, parents, staff, and the community.
Equipment Used:
- Sports-specific equipment and general athletic gear.
- Basic office equipment (computer, telephone) as needed.
Place Where Work is Performed:
- Assigned school athletic facilities, including fields, courts, and gyms.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to stand, walk, and move actively for extended periods.
- Must be able to demonstrate athletic techniques.
- Must be able to lift and carry sports equipment as needed.
