Job Title: Athletic Director

School: Perquimans County Intermediate School

Reports to: Principal

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Sports Management, or related field (or equivalent).
  • Experience in coaching, athletic administration, or school athletic leadership (preferably at the middle- or high-school level).

Position Summary

The Interim Athletic Director at Perquimans County Middle School will provide leadership, oversight, and management of the school's athletic program for grades 6-8. The AD will ensure that all athletic activities, contests, and programs operate in compliance with applicable state policies, league/association rules, district/school board regulations, and the school's mission to promote student-athlete growth, safety, sportsmanship, and academic success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Administration & Compliance
  • Oversee day-to-day management of the athletic department, including scheduling of games, supervising coaches, coordinating facilities usage, and managing budget/stipends within allocated funds.
  • Ensure compliance with NCDPI policies on interscholastic athletics (middle/junior high level), which indicate that at the middle school level, local boards of education enforce policies (rather than the NCHSAA directly) for middle schools. Must know or be familiar with these rules & policies.
  • Collaborate with the district athletic office and adhere to the school district's athletic guidelines, handbooks, and eligibility standards (e.g., attendance, academic, and age requirements).
  • Maintain and review all required forms and documentation (e.g., physical/health clearance, parent/guardian consent forms, concussion protocol forms, coach certifications).
  • Ensure all coaches and staff receive required training or certification (e.g., concussion training, NFHS courses, or district-mandated professional development).
  • Uphold policies regarding eligibility, amateur status, attendance, and conduct of student-athletes.
  • Leadership & Supervision
  • Supervise coaches, athletic trainers/first responders, and assistants: recruit, evaluate, mentor, and support them in their roles.
  • Promote a culture of sportsmanship, equity, inclusion, and a student-first mentality ("students first, athletes second").
  • Serve as a liaison between the athletics program, parents/guardians, booster clubs, community stakeholders, and district leadership.
  • Budgeting, Facilities & Operations
  • Develop and monitor the athletic budget, ensure financial responsibilities (equipment, uniforms, travel, stipends) are managed appropriately.
  • Oversee the scheduling and maintenance of athletic facilities (fields, gym) in coordination with school operations/maintenance.
  • Manage transportation logistics for away contests, coordinate with the district's transportation department, and ensure safety guidelines are met.
  • Oversee athletic events: ensure staffing (game officials, event workers), ticketing (if applicable), risk management, and adherence to safety and crowd behavior protocols.
  • Scheduling & Program Development
  • Create and maintain athletic calendars (tryouts, practices, competitions, tournaments) for all sports seasons (fall, winter, spring).
  • Work with coaches to develop tryout schedules, team selection processes, practice schedules, and competition schedules.
  • Promote middle school athletics as a feeder into the high school program while emphasizing the developmental nature of middle school sports.
  • Student-Athlete Welfare & Academic Support
  • Monitor student-athlete academic progress and eligibility in coordination with academic staff; work proactively with at-risk student-athletes to ensure they meet eligibility and help with retention in the program.
  • Implement and monitor attendance and behavior standards for participants, including consistent enforcement of conduct expectations, training on sportsmanship, and alignment with school discipline policies.
  • Promote health and wellness initiatives (sports nutrition, injury prevention, safe conditioning, off-season training guidance).
  • Communicate with families about expectations, schedules, eligibility requirements, injuries/medical concerns, and encourage family engagement in the athletic program.
  • Communication, Marketing & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Serve as the point of contact for Athletics.
  • Work with booster clubs, parent volunteers, and community partners to support fundraising, event staffing, and promotion of athletics in the school community.
  • Represent the school in district athletic meetings, coaches' meetings, conferences, and inter-school coordination.
  • Prepare and maintain records, reports, and data on athletics participation, incidents, injuries, budgets, and outcomes; present to school leadership (when requested).
  • Other Duties
  • Respond to and investigate incidents related to athletics (e.g., rule violations, eligibility concerns, injuries, safety hazards) and coordinate corrective actions in accordance with district policy.
  • Stay current on changes in state/district athletic policy and adjust practices/procedures accordingly (e.g., eligibility, age/grade rules, safety mandates from NCDPI or NCHSAA).
  • Perform such other duties as assigned by the principal or District Athletic Director.
