Position Summary

The Athletic Trainer must have advanced knowledge in the field of athletic training. The trainer will specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses in athletes. The role will involve evaluating injuries, developing rehabilitation plans, and providing first aid and emergency care.

SALARY SCHEDULE PLACEMENT: Range of $44,152 - $79,906 based upon the 2026-2027 Alabama Community College System and Shelton State Community College Salary Schedule C3-4 to be determined by the applicant's education and years of applicable experience. Applicant acknowledges that if selected for the position that applicant's placement on the applicable salary schedule will be dependent upon the verified information provided by the applicant in accordance with the applicable work experience verification requirements stated in the official job posting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Establish an effective athletic training program for the College's athletic department
  • Provide first aid and injury assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning for the College's student-athletes
  • Assess and make appropriate physician referrals for student-athletes as deemed necessary
  • Assess and make recommendations to the College's coaches regarding the physical fitness of the College's student-athletes for participation in athletic events
  • Coordinate the annual required athletic physicals and supervise the clearance of injured student-athletes prior to and during the sport seasons
  • Maintain a line of communication with the team physician(s) regarding athletic health care and recommended treatment and/or rehabilitation for all athletic-related injuries to student-athletes
  • Assist coaching staff in evaluating and implementing sport-specific conditioning programs and methods
  • Maintain an effective and efficient athletic training room
  • Facilitate the preparation and filing of all necessary reports associated with athletic injuries and/or incidents
  • Oversee the ordering of supplies and equipment pertaining to the athletic training room and maintain an up-to-date inventory based upon the needs of the College
  • Provide the Athletic Director with an annual budget for supplies and equipment
  • Assess and equip each of the College's sports teams with appropriate medical equipment
  • Assist in the selection and fitting of protective equipment, including special taping, pads, or braces
  • Create a safe playing environment by monitoring and controlling environmental risks
  • Share professional literature related to athletic training with the College's coaching staff
  • Establish and provide EPAs for all athletic venues for all the College's sports teams
  • Maintain current CPR and AED certifications
  • Teach and facilitate the certification of all the College's athletic coaches in CPR and AED
  • Attend all home practices and games

Secondary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide regular updates to the Athletic Director
  • Collaborate with athletic staff on ideas to better serve the athletic department
  • Provide daily and weekly updates to coaches for injured athletes
  • Evaluate all athletic venues for safety precautions
  • Attend away games as needed

Other Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and keep current with necessary licensure and certifications related to position, including all continuing education requirements
  • Comply with policies of the Alabama Community College System and the College
  • Serve on College committees as required
  • Participate in professional development, compliance, and other training activities as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master's degree in athletic training from an institution accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE)
  • Five or more years of collegiate athletic training work experience
  • Current certification from the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATA-BOC)
  • Current state licensure from the Alabama Board of Athletic Trainers
  • Current Emergency Medical Response Certification

Salary Calculation: For all positions on all Salary Schedules, the salary amount for the selected applicant is determined by step placement on the applicable schedule. Step placement is dependent upon the following: (a) all work experience in public education in Alabama and (b) all other work experience outside of public education in Alabama that, in the sole judgment of the College, directly relates to the requirements of the position. The applicant selected for the position must provide written verification(s) of this work experience within the time provided herein if such experience is to be considered in determining their initial step place on the Salary Schedule.

Format for Work Experience Verifications: Work experience verifications should be in the form of verification letters from employers and must include complete employment dates, job title(s), job duties, and an indication whether such employment was full-time or part-time, and if part-time, the average number of hours worked each week. The letters should be on official letterhead and contain an authorized personnel signature. The College's official employment verification form is also acceptable and is available upon request. If an employment verification cannot be obtained due to a legitimate reason, for purposes of meeting minimum requirements an applicant may submit copies of other trustworthy documentation such as appointment letters, contracts, pay stubs, or W-2 forms documenting the term of employment. However, such documentation is generally insufficient for salary calculation purposes if job duties and dates of employment are not self-evident in the documentation.

Work experience verification from a current employer may, upon request, be delayed until an official offer of employment. The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. Tuition Assistance

This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:

  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
  • 2/3 waived after 2nd year
  • 3/3 waived after 3rd year
