This position is located in the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Organizational Cultural and Wellness Bureau (OCWB), Metropolitan Police Academy (MPA), Cadet Corps Branch. The Athletic Trainer provides a full range of athletic training to MPD and MPA employees; as well as other health-related activities as assigned.

The incumbent will be responsible for the following:

  • The administration and operation of the Injury Care and Prevention Program of the MPD and MPA.
  • Performing prevention, recognition, evaluation and treatment of injuries/conditions related to athletic or work-related training activities for MPD and the MPA.
  • Designing rehabilitative programs utilizing various modalities and prescriptive exercise; administers various types of modalities and prescriptive exercises.
  • Maintaining the inventory, resupply, maintenance and replacement of clinic equipment and materials.
  • Working in coordination with Police and Fire Clinic Staff, Physical Training Staff, and other safety and health related positions.
  • Developing and administering physical performance tests.
  • Conferring with physicians regarding abnormal results requiring physician intervention.
  • Communicating with Risk Management claims managers and insurance adjusters on the status of work-related injuries.
  • Communicating with Risk Management claims managers and insurance adjusters to assure proper record-keeping and reporting.
  • Ensuring current, accurate and complete evaluation and treatment records.
  • Maintaining medical records, injury reports and progress in accordance with MPD and MPA policies.
  • Developing and distributing annual reports of fiscal responsibility and program development.
  • Communicating with MPA supervisors, MPD employee supervisors on status of employees as needed.
  • Communicating with treating physicians with patient progress notes, email, telephone calls; refers employees to other healthcare providers as needed.
  • Communicating with nurses and case managers as applicable for each employee; communicating with employees to assure compliance with individual treatment protocol.
  • Maintaining ethical and professional standards of practice.
  • Assisting the Physical Skills Unit Supervisors and physical training staff in the development and implementation of the physical training program.
  • Developing and presenting various training and educational materials and programs to employees.
  • Maintaining the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers (BOC) Certification and staying current on best practices for the evaluation and treatment of employees through annual attendance of approved continuing education.
  • Ensuring clinical practice is in compliance with Washington D.C. Law.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Education and Work Experience

Education

Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position (Example: Exercise Science, Athletic Training or related field). This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Licensures, Certifications and other requirements

The employee is required to possess and maintain a valid District of Columbia driver's license or it's state equivalent and a Certification by the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers (BOC).

Possession of a National Strength & Conditioning Association Certification, Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or National Academy of Sports Medicine Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) or Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES), Functional Movement background or certification National Athletic Training Association (NATA) and for administering Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is strongly preferred.

Work Experience

Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the CS-09 grade level in the District of Columbia government or its non-District equivalent, gained from the private or public sector.

Work Environment

Work is performed in an office, clinic, classroom setting, fitness center, and outdoors. The instructional duties associated with athletic training can exposes the incumbent to possible strains when lifting injured or when treating injured participants. The work performed can expose the employee to the possibility of contagious diseases; and is likely to come in contact with blood and body fluids. All safety regulations, policies and procedures must be adhered to.

Physical Demands

The work involves assisting with or transferring individuals of various weights/heights; lift up to 50lbs required to move/transfer supplies and equipment or to perform an ergonomic task; sit for periods of time in meetings and completing data or documents necessary; reach, bend, stoop, squat, kneel and grip to administer employee care and perform necessary tasks; hear and speak in order to converse with personnel and supervisors; stand for long periods of time, and have good mobility skills and be able to walk distances.

Collective Bargaining Unit:

This is a union position and is covered under the National Association of Government Employees (NAGE) bargaining unit. You may be required to pay an agency fee through direct payroll deductions.

Position Designation:

The Metropolitan Police Department is a 24-hour, 7 days a week operation. This position is considered "essential" per DPM Chapter 12. An essential employee is always required to report to or remain at work during a declared emergency.

Position Suitability:

This position is deemed as "Safety Sensitive" pursuant to Chapter 4 of the D.C. Personnel Regulations, in addition to the general suitability screening and criminal background check (pre-employment and periodic), individuals may be subject to the following checks and tests:

a. Traffic record check (as applicable);

b. Pre-employment drug and alcohol test (as applicable);

c. Consumer credit check (as applicable);

d. Reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol test;

e. Random drug and alcohol test;

f. Return to duty or follow-up drug and alcohol test; and

g. Post-accident or incident drug and alcohol test.

Due to the sensitive nature of work performed within the Metropolitan Police Department, all selected candidates must undergo and successfully complete and enhanced background investigation, including criminal history and credit checks, as a condition of employment.

Residency Preference

Applicants claiming "Residency Preference" will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
