Kitsap County is seeking a legal professional to serve as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney 1 or 2 in this critical role representing the State of Washington in criminal proceedings. As the Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, you will:
- Represent the State of Washington in adult and juvenile criminal proceedings, managing cases from charging through trial and post-conviction actions
- Review and evaluate evidence, including forensic findings and expert testimony, and present cases effectively in bench trials, jury trials, and hearings
- Conduct witness and victim interviews to prepare testimony and ensure strong case development
- Screen, charge, and resolve criminal cases within Kitsap County jurisdiction with sound legal judgment
- Negotiate case resolutions professionally, ethically, and in good faith
- Advocate in post-conviction matters, including motions to revoke, collateral attacks, and requests for relief such as record sealing or restoration of rights
- Assess legal and factual sufficiency of cases at all stages, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and prosecutorial standards
- Research, draft, and argue legal motions, as well as misdemeanor appeals as assigned
- Provide after-hours legal consultation to law enforcement, including guidance on search warrants
- Respond to citizen inquiries regarding criminal cases and outcomes with professionalism and clarity
- Collaborate with senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys and support office-wide initiatives as assigned
- Participate in ongoing professional development, maintaining Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements and staying current on legal best practices
Note: This position may be underfilled as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney 1, depending on qualifications.
What you bring:
Professional Credentials/Licensing:
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- Membership in the Washington State Bar Association
- Admission to practice before the State Courts
Professional Experience:
- Attorney 1: 1 year of prior experience as a law clerk or legal intern (preferred)
- Attorney 2: 1 year of experience practicing criminal law.
