Founded in 2015, the Westside Justice Center (WJC) is not just a workplace; it's a community-driven Legal Aid clinic committed to empowering individuals and fostering authentic community leadership.As an Attorney, you will harness your legal expertise to provide comprehensive representation, counsel, and referrals to eligible clients across various practice areas. Collaborating closely with our team, you will engage in impactful litigation, advocacy, and community outreach initiatives aimed at mitigating the consequences of incarceration on criminalized communities by:Facilitating legal literacy to reduce recidivismProviding legal and quasi-legal assistance to individualsEstablishing and nurturing community trust through participatory deliberations and restorative justice practicesKey Responsibilities: Client Representation Provide legal representation, legal counsel, and referrals to eligible clients in a wide range of practice areasCoordinate on-site legal clinics and intakesEngage in impact litigation, administrative, and legislative advocacyAssist in supervision and support of paralegals, interns, and volunteer attorneysPrepare periodic reports for internal and external purposesProgram Support Provide legal consultationRecruit, train and supervise volunteer attorneysCollaborate with partner organizations for training and outreach presentationsPlan, implement and document outreach and training programsSuccessful Candidates will possess: Licensed to practice law in IllinoisExcellent client interviewing skillsOutstanding interpersonal and presentation skillsProven ability to explain complex legal situations compassionately and effectively to people in crisisAbility to communicate clearly and effectively, both in writing and orally, to a wide variety of audiencesAbility to prioritize workSkilled in project managementAbility to work in a fast‑paced, self‑directed environmentAbility to work well independently as well as a member of a teamStrong organizational skills and proven attention to detailCultural CompetencyDemonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusionProficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)Benefits: Community ImpactHealth InsuranceDental InsuranceVision InsurancePaid Time Off401(k)Work Environment: The work environment described here is representative of that an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
