Job Description

If you're a labor and employment attorney who wants mission-driven work representing educators and their unions, this opportunity lets you advocate directly for California Teachers Association members while working at a genuinely sustainable pace, with a real partnership track ahead.

What's in it for you? You'll represent CTA members in Education Code disciplinary matters and credentialing disputes, advise on pay, classification, disability accommodation, layoffs, leaves, and transfers, and manage a full caseload of about 20 to 30 matters a month. The role offers a hybrid schedule of three days in-office and two days remote, a collectively bargained salary of $110,000–$138,000, a discretionary annual bonus, and billable expectations of around 145 hours a month, well below the industry norm.

What You'll Bring

  • 2+ years of labor and employment experience
  • Education-sector exposure a plus
  • Union-side experience preferred; plaintiffs' employment law or public interest backgrounds also considered
  • Genuine commitment to the labor movement and workers' rights
  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and active California Bar membership in good standing
  • Excellent legal writing and effective oral advocacy skills

The Role

  • Represent CTA members in Education Code disciplinary actions and credentialing matters
  • Handle district disputes involving pay, classification, disability accommodation, layoffs, leaves, and transfers
  • Advise CTA members on a wide range of employment-related issues
  • Manage an active caseload of approximately 20–30 matters per month
  • Conduct legal research and draft briefs, motions, and pleadings
  • Communicate directly with clients, districts, and firm leadership

The position is based in Oakland, CA, with a hybrid schedule of three in-office days and two remote days, plus a monthly work-from-home subsidy. Billable expectations average approximately 145 assignable hours per month, designed for a sustainable pace, and the role is available to start immediately.

Benefits

  • 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision coverage for employee, spouse, and dependents, plus $50,000 life insurance and long-term disability coverage
  • 401(k) with dollar-for-dollar match on the first $5,000, and profit sharing eligibility starting day one of year two
  • 11.5 holidays, 3 weeks of vacation in year one (increasing annually for 3 years), sick leave, and parental leave after one year
  • Student loan assistance up to $5,250, commute and work-from-home subsidies, relocation assistance, FSA/DFA options, and a partnership track typically running 6–9 years

Salary Range: $110,000–$138,000
