    Summary:

    The 4th year Audiology externship allows the student extern, currently enrolled in an ASHA accredited Doctor of Audiology program, a clinical year to become proficient in performing diagnostic tests, treatments and interpersonal skills under the supervision of a licensed Audiologist and ENT physician. Identify, assess and manage disorders of the auditory, balance and other neural systems according to the principles and practices of Audiology in all areas of the hospital system including but not limited to: Acute care, Outpatient, In-patient (CMR), and NO ENT and Allergy Clinic. All duties are carried out under direct supervision of a licensed audiologist.

    4th Year Audiology Externship - current enrollment in an ASHA accredited Doctor of Audiology program is required.

    Licensure/Certification/Registration:

    Completion with pass of the Praxis Examination in Audiology preferred.

    Experience/Skills:

    Working knowledge of proper equipment used for audiology/electrophysiology evaluations.

    Physical Demands:

    Manual or Physical Skill Required: Body mechanics. Physical Effort Required: Intermittent exertion in positioning or lifting patients, equipment or other materials.

    Responsibilities:

    1. Perform activities that identify, assess, diagnose, manage, and interpret test results related to disorders of hearing, balance, and other neural systems.

    2. Perform otoscopic examination in order to evaluate hearing or balance, make ear impressions, fit hearing protection or prosthetic devices, monitor the continuous use of hearing aids.

    3. Conduct and interpret behavioral, electroacoustic, or electrophysiologic methods used to assess hearing, balance, and neural system function.

    4. Perform newborn hearing screens. Coordinate the follow-up for all newborns that fail the screen or who require further follow-up due to risk factors for progressive hearing loss.

    5. Provide consultation to educators as members of interdisciplinary team about communication management, educational implications of hearing loss, educational programming, classroom acoustics, and large-area amplification systems for children with hearing loss.

    6. Provide prevention of hearing loss and conservation of hearing function by designing, implementing, and coordinating occupational, school, and community hearing conservation and identification programs.

    7. Provide screening of speech-language, use of sign language (e.g., American Sign Language and cued speech), and other factors affecting communication function for the purposes of an audiologic evaluation and/or initial identification of individuals with other communication disorders.

    8. Provide consultation about accessibility for persons with hearing aids, education, and counseling.

    9. Serve as a liaison for the consumer, family, and agencies in order to monitor audiologic status and management and to make recommendations about educational and vocational programming.

    10. Participation in the development of professional and technical standards.

    11. Prepare written documentation as required by the profession and the department, such as evaluation results, treatment plans, progress reports, and other such reports.

    12. Comply with department policies, procedures, objectives, safety, environmental, infection control and quality assurance programs.

    13. Perform other duties as requested by supervisor.
