The Home Health & Hospice Authorization Specialist Lead II supports the Prebilling and Authorization Manager by providing leadership, training, quality oversight, and subject matter expertise related to insurance eligibility verification and prior authorizations. This role ensures the accurate and timely processing of insurance verifications and authorization requests for Home Health and Hospice services while assisting with staff development, quality assurance, workflow monitoring, and performance metrics.

The Authorization Specialist Lead II serves as a resource for team members and operational leaders, maintains expertise in payer requirements, and helps drive productivity, quality, and compliance within the authorization department. This position operates primarily in a remote environment with occasional onsite support as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

• Verify insurance eligibility and obtain authorizations for current and prospective Home Health and Hospice patients in accordance with payer-specific guidelines.
• Accurately enter insurance eligibility, authorization, and coverage information into applicable systems.
• Monitor authorizations to ensure services remain approved, current, and compliant with payer requirements.
• Perform timely re-authorizations and ongoing eligibility reviews.
• Review and validate authorization requests to ensure quality, accuracy, and compliance.
• Communicate authorization and eligibility updates to Clinical Managers, Business Managers, and branch leadership.
• Notify branches of coverage limitations, authorization concerns, denials, or non-covered service issues.
• Maintain thorough documentation of authorization activities and communicate changes affecting patient care or billing.
• Interpret payer requirements and ensure information is entered correctly according to contract and payer guidelines.
• Serve as a resource for complex authorization, eligibility, and payer-related issues.
• Assist the Prebilling and Authorization Manager with Quality Assurance Reviews (QARs), identifying inaccuracies, workflow issues, and potential bad debt risks.
• Provide training, coaching, mentoring, and support to Authorization Specialists as directed.
• Lead and support workflows to maximize productivity, accuracy, and quality outcomes.
• Keep Revenue Cycle leadership and operational teams informed of authorization delays, concerns, trends, and process issues.
• Stay current on payer requirements, authorization regulations, reimbursement practices, and industry trends.
• Participate in the after-hours on-call rotation as needed to support patient care and operational needs.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience

• Minimum one year of experience in a healthcare setting with knowledge of payer sources, insurance eligibility, and authorization processes required.
• Two to four years of healthcare experience with demonstrated expertise in payer requirements, authorizations, and revenue cycle processes preferred.
• Home Health and Hospice experience is strongly preferred.
• Previous experience leading workflows, mentoring team members, or training staff preferred.
