Position Details

Portland Public Schools: High School Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Teacher

Portland Public Schools seeks an innovative, compassionate, and student-centered Special Education Teacher to serve in our High School Self-Contained Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Program. The successful candidate will provide specialized instruction and support to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder while fostering academic growth, social-emotional development, communication skills, independence, and successful transition outcomes.

The desired candidate would possess the following attributes:

  • Exceptional communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder and evidence-based instructional practices for students with diverse learning, communication, sensory, and behavioral needs.
  • Experience implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), behavior intervention plans, and de-escalation strategies.
  • Understanding of structured teaching practices, visual supports, social skills instruction, and individualized programming.
  • Ability to manage complex and stressful situations with sound judgment, professionalism, and composure.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with paraprofessionals, related service providers, general education staff, and families.
  • High character, compassion for students and families, and a collaborative mindset.
  • Ability to effectively integrate technology, assistive technology, and communication supports into instruction and student learning.
  • Commitment to preparing students for post-secondary success, independent living, employment, and community participation.
  • Willingness to contribute to extracurricular programs and the broader school community.

Eligible candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (SV) endorsement preferred. Candidates holding another Special Education endorsement and willing to obtain ASD endorsement may be considered.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IDEA, Michigan Special Education Rules, and special education compliance requirements.
  • Ability to facilitate IEP meetings and complete required documentation in a timely and compliant manner.
  • Experience developing and implementing individualized educational programs designed to meet students' academic, behavioral, communication, social-emotional, and functional needs.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and utilize student data to inform instructional decisions and monitor progress toward IEP goals.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and community partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to support and improve student achievement and functional outcomes.
  • Commitment to contributing to a positive school culture with high expectations, collaboration, and strong community engagement.

Position Details:

  • Reports to: Special Education Supervisor and Building Principal
  • Calendar: As per District Calendar and PEA contract
  • Compensation: In accordance with PEA contract
