Position Summary
The Automation & Controls Field Service Technician supports the operation and performance of automation, electrical, instrumentation, and mechanical systems across municipal and industrial
water/wastewater facilities in the Mid-Atlantic region. This role focuses on field-based installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of control systems, including instrumentation, motor controls, and PLC/SCADA platforms. The position requires independent work across multiple customer sites and involves frequent overnight travel.
Technical Fundamentals
- Install, calibrate, and maintain process instrumentation (flow, level, pressure, analytical) and associated field devices
- Troubleshoot and service electrical systems including control panels, MCCs, motor controls, and VFDs
- Maintain and repair pumping systems, including centrifugal and submersible pumps, motors, and drives
- Support PLC, relay logic, and SCADA/DCS systems for diagnostics and system performance
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and control drawings to perform service tasks
Education & Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associate's degree, technical certification, or trade school training in Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, HVAC, Plumbing, Water Treatment, or related field preferred
- Trade licenses, manufacturer certifications, or industry credentials in pumping systems, HVAC, plumbing, or water treatment plus
- Experience working with a systems integrator and exposure to DCS/SCADA and diverse pumping/process systems plus
Experience
4 6 years of hands-on field service experience in pumping systems, HVAC, plumbing, water treatment, or related mechanical disciplines required
Proven experience troubleshooting and repairing pumps, motor controls, mechanical seals, and related electrical/mechanical systems required
Ability to work independently across service, maintenance, and repair activities required
Experience in commercial and/or municipal water/wastewater environments preferred
Experience with equipment startup, commissioning, and performance verification preferred
Strong track record of safe, professional field conduct and customer-facing experience plus
Technical Skills
- Working knowledge of PLC/SCADA systems and control systems
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics
- Basic computer skills for field reporting and documentation
- Familiarity with OSHA safety practices and LOTO procedures
