Overview
The Automation Controls Technician works alongside automation engineers and senior technicians to build, assemble, wire, plumb, test run, troubleshoot, and repair custom-designed automation equipment at Hubbell Incorporated's Lincoln, NH facility. Utilizing mechanical, machining, and electronic troubleshooting skills, this role interprets SolidWorks models, CAD drawings, and technical specifications to bring custom equipment concepts to life. The position integrates high-tech systems—including robotics, lasers, dial indexers, pick-and-place mechanisms, automatic feeders, packaging units, induction heating, welding, forming, and pressing machinery—while organizing incoming materials and maintaining workstation safety standards.
Job Specifications- Collaborate with automation engineers to interpret SolidWorks 3D models, blueprints, schematics, and technical specifications for custom automation equipment builds
- Calculate dimensions, plan assembly layouts, and determine assembly methods for complex automated machinery and mechanical components
- Assemble, fit, align, wire, and plumb custom-designed automation equipment and sub-assemblies
- Set up, operate, and troubleshoot basic automation electronics and control components, including sensors, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), and basic PLC/robotic interfaces
- Utilize machine shop tools (lathes, milling machines, welding equipment) to machine, fabricate, adjust, and verify conformance of custom parts to exact tolerances
- Receive, inspect, organize, and track project materials from internal machine shops and external vendors
- Maintain project organization, cleanliness, and strict adherence to environmental, health, and safety protocols
- Attend ongoing technical training to expand skills in programming, machine maintenance, basic electrical, mechanical, hydraulics, pneumatics, and PLC/robotic coding
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in a mechanic, manufacturing, or machinist environment required (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Proven hands-on mechanical, fabrication, machining, assembly, and equipment repair capabilities required
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, schematics, and SolidWorks models required
- Associate degree (AS) in Engineering Technology, Automation, Mechatronics, or a related discipline preferred
- Practical hands-on mechanical experience gained from automotive, agricultural, or residential equipment repair highly preferred
