QA Automation Lead

About PakEnergy

PakEnergy (formerly WolfePak Software) builds the business automation platform for the energy industry. More than 2,300 companies — operators, midstream businesses, investors, and service firms — run their accounting, land, production, transportation, and wellsite operations on our SaaS solutions. Our software does serious work: month-end close, revenue distribution, joint interest billing, and the data-heavy financial workflows that keep energy companies running. When our numbers are wrong, our customers' books are wrong — which is why quality engineering matters here more than most places.

About the role

We're looking for a hands-on QA Automation Lead to own test automation strategy and execution for our flagship products. This is a contract engagement: the resource will remain employed by your firm while working as a dedicated contractor embedded in PakEnergy's QA organization. It is a working-lead role: the person will write automation every week, and will also set technical direction, raise the bar on quality practices, and mentor the QA engineers around them.
Our automation practice is modern and evolving. We build UI and API automation in Playwright with TypeScript, and we use AI-assisted development as a core part of the workflow — Claude with Playwright MCP for generating, debugging, and maintaining tests. We also maintain automation in Tricentis Tosca. All code, including automation tests, lives in GitHub, and we manage our SDLC in Azure DevOps. This person will lead across the toolchain, decide what belongs where, and define how AI-generated automation is reviewed and held to a professional standard.
Because our products are accounting and operations systems, testing here goes deeper than the UI. A passing click-through means little if a revenue allocation is wrong underneath. This role designs automation that proves the numbers are right — validating APIs, databases, and batch processes with controlled test data — and becomes a subject-matter expert in how our products actually work.

Responsibilities

  • Own the test automation strategy and roadmap across both toolchains — Playwright and Tricentis Tosca — including what to automate, what to keep manual, and where each tool fits best.
  • Administer our Tosca environment: workspaces and repository maintenance, user access and licensing, distributed execution (DEX) agents, and version upgrades.
  • Design, build, and maintain our Playwright + TypeScript framework: page objects, fixtures, API testing, environment configuration, parallel execution, and trace-based failure diagnosis.
  • Lead our AI-assisted automation practice: use Claude and Playwright MCP to accelerate test development, define the standards AI-generated code must meet, and ensure every generated test is reviewed, robust, and able to fail when it should.
  • Build validation that goes below the UI — SQL and API checks, seeded test data, and verification of batch processes and financial calculations across workflows like month-end close and revenue distribution.
  • Maintain automation code in GitHub with disciplined branching and pull-request review, integrate suites into CI/CD, keep them fast and reliable, and drive flaky tests to zero with evidence-based diagnosis rather than retries and sleeps.
  • Mentor and technically lead QA engineers: code reviews, pairing, locator and assertion standards, and growing the team's automation and AI skills.
  • Lead defect triage with development, product, and support — separating application defects from test and environment issues, tracking work and defects in Azure DevOps, and following high-severity problems through to resolution.
  • Give clear, evidence-based release readiness assessments: what's tested, what's at risk, and a go/no-go recommendation grounded in business impact.
  • Report on automation health with metrics that matter: flake rate, coverage of critical business workflows, escaped defects, and suite runtime.

Required qualifications

  • 8+ years in software quality assurance, including 5+ years building test automation and 2+ years leading or mentoring other QA engineers.
  • Expert-level Playwright with TypeScript/JavaScript — framework design from scratch, fixtures, API testing, and real experience diagnosing flaky tests with traces and CI artifacts.
  • Strong API testing and SQL skills, with a track record of validating data correctness — not just UI behavior — in data-intensive applications.
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding assistants (Claude, Copilot, Cursor, or similar) in a disciplined engineering workflow; direct experience with Playwright MCP or MCP-based agent tooling strongly preferred.
  • Solid Git/GitHub workflow skills (branching, pull requests, code review) and experience integrating automation into CI/CD pipelines; familiarity with Azure DevOps for SDLC and work-item management is a plus.
  • The judgment to know what not to automate, and the communication skills to explain quality risk to technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.

Nice to have

  • Tricentis Tosca experience or certification, including Tosca administration (workspaces, user management, DEX agents, upgrades) — or demonstrated success picking up model-based testing tools quickly (we'll support Tricentis Academy training).
  • Domain experience in oil and gas, energy, accounting/ERP, or other financial software.
  • Experience testing batch, ETL, or event-driven data workflows.
  • Performance testing experience (K6, LoadRunner, or similar).
  • ISTQB certifications (CTFL, CT-TAE).

Engagement details

  • Contract engagement: the candidate is employed by your firm and works as a dedicated contractor for PakEnergy.
  • Fully remote, with working hours overlapping US Central time for collaboration with our QA and development teams.
  • Embedded role: day-to-day direction comes from PakEnergy QA leadership, with access to our tools (GitHub, Azure DevOps, Playwright/Claude toolchain, Tosca) per our security and access policies.
  • A modern toolchain — we invest in AI-assisted engineering and expect this person to help shape how it's used, not just follow a playbook.
  • Real ownership: this role's automation strategy directly protects the financial systems used by 2,300+ energy companies.
  • Submissions: please include a current resume and, where possible, links to verifiable professional profiles (e.g., LinkedIn). Shortlisted candidates should be prepared for a hands-on technical interview covering Playwright, AI-assisted automation, and data validation.
