JOB OVERVIEW

GENERAL OVERVIEW

Safety Sensitive Position. Under the general supervision of the Fleet Services Manager or designee, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled technical work on repairs and maintenance of county automobile, light truck and equipment requiring moderate responsibility and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform a variety of scheduled and unscheduled repairs and maintenance on county vehicles in a timely and safe manner.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, vendors, law enforcement, other agencies, and the general public.

Review work orders and refer to related repair manuals for references as necessary; prepare and maintain accurate records (physical and electronic); log performance and close orders as completed

Adhere to production and labor time targets to ensure results meet or exceed expected objectives.

Install electrical wiring and equipment in and on new vehicles and troubleshoot wiring problems as needed.

Perform advance equipment procedures (e.g. mount, install, fabricate, wire, solder, troubleshoot, repair, and other related tasks) on emergency/public safety vehicles, including but not limited to lights, sirens, computer consoles, antennas, and two-way radio systems.

Evaluate and carry out assigned preventive maintenance on all county vehicles and equipment utilizing the most efficient and cost effective means to complete repairs.

Utilize diagnostic procedures and tools to ensure repairs are completed in a cost effective and safe manner.

Operate and road test equipment to diagnose repair needs.

Test repairs to ensure proper operation before vehicle is released to operator or fleet.

Ensure all parts used during work productions are accurately accounted for to assist in inventory control and billing charges.

Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Perform major overhauls and repairs of engines, transmissions, differentials, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, cooling systems, climate control systems and other mechanical and electrical components.

Perform minor body work repairs, routine welding, and touch ups.

Provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.

Review work orders and refer to related repair manuals for references as necessary.

Deliver and pick up parts, orders, and vehicles.

Maintain current knowledge of procedures and trends in automotive technology.

Report to assigned worksite with regular, predictable, and consistent attendance.

Peripheral Duties

May serve as a member of various employee committees.

Performs other duties as assigned/directed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED required; additional specialized training in auto repair preferred.*

Three (3) years of experience in automotive and or light truck repair required*

  • Approved education or work experience beyond that required which provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered and substituted for the stated education or experience.

Special Requirements

Must have and maintain throughout employment a valid Driver's License, as well as meet eligibility requirements of "acceptable driver standards" as defined by the County.

Must have (or ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire) and maintain throughout employment forklift certification.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of automotive light truck and equipment mechanics

Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, pumps and valves, generators, and welding

Working knowledge of and ability to operate computers, diagnostic equipment, and other technology using standard or customized software, applications, or systems Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities

Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.

Effective communications skills

Skilled in time management

Demonstrable skill in diagnosing equipment defects

Ability to read and interpret schematics (e.g. hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, mechanical, and other associated schematics) related to work tasks

Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines

Ability to prioritize work, carry out assigned projects to their completion, and meet deadlines

Ability to work under pressure and/or frequent interruptions

Ability to navigate stressful situations while maintaining composure

Ability to operate tools and equipment including, but not limited to, multiline phone, computer, printer, scanner, automotive testing equipment, power and hand tools, air tools, jacks and hydraulic lifts, electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment, mobile or portable radio, and other tools and equipment needed to perform job duties
