Coconino Community College is creating a pool of interested instructors to teach and train students in automotive technology. Position Summary

Coconino Community College is creating a pool of interested instructors to teach and train students in automotive technology. Instructors may teach courses, labs, and hands-on training in one or more of the following areas:

  • Electric Vehicle (EV) Technology
  • Basic Engine Systems and Repair
  • Automotive Electrical Systems
  • Automotive Maintenance and Diagnostics

The ideal candidate possesses substantial experience in the automotive industry, a passion for workforce development, and the ability to prepare students for careers in the rapidly evolving automotive industry. Instructions may include theory, diagnostics, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair procedures, and industry safety standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality classrooms, laboratories, and hands-on instruction in automotive technology courses.
  • Demonstrate industry-standard automotive diagnostic, maintenance, and repair procedures.
  • Teach foundational concepts related to internal combustion engines, electric vehicles, hybrid systems, and automotive electrical systems.
  • Develop and maintain lesson plans, instructional materials, laboratory activities, and assessments.
  • Evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback to support student success.
  • Maintain a safe learning environment and ensure compliance with industry safety standards.
  • Operate, maintain, and oversee automotive shop equipment, tools, vehicles, and training aids.
  • Incorporate current industry technologies, manufacturer recommendations, and emerging trends into instruction.
  • Advise and mentor students regarding career pathways, certifications, and employment opportunities.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and industry partners to support workforce training and program development.
  • Participate in professional development activities to maintain technical expertise and instructional effectiveness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of automotive engine operation, maintenance, diagnostics, and repair. Knowledge of electric vehicle systems, battery technologies, charging systems, and high-voltage safety procedures. Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot automotive mechanical and electrical systems. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer specifications. Ability to effectively demonstrate automotive repair and maintenance procedures. Ability to foster student engagement and create a positive learning environment. Commitment to workforce readiness, student success, and continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications A1 - A9 (Brake Systems, Engine Repair, Suspension and Steering, Heating and Air Conditioning, Electrical and Electronic Systems, Manual Drive Trains and Axles, Automatic Transmission and Transaxles, Engine Performance, Light Vehicle Diesel Engines)
  • And/or 2 years of directly related industry experience
  • And/or ASE G1 and 3 years of directly related industry experience

Preferred

  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications in relevant specialty areas.
  • Manufacturer-specific certifications (Tesla, Ford, GM, Toyota, Rivian, or other OEM training programs).
  • Electric Vehicle or Hybrid Vehicle certifications.
  • Associate degree, technical certificate, or higher in Automotive Technology or a related field.

Part-time employees working 20 hours or more per week for at least 20 weeks within the fiscal year (July 1-June 30) are eligible to participate in the Arizona State Retirement System and receive tuition waiver benefits.
