Position Summary

Provide competent classroom and laboratory instruction in the area of credentialed expertise. The Automotive Technology Instructor is responsible to the Division Chair and/or the appropriate Associate Dean for planning, preparing, and presenting appropriate and effective learning experiences to students.

Salary: Appropriate placement on ACCS Salary Schedule D: $42,108 - $94,363 (9 months)

An additional summer assignment may be available: $13,001 - $29,184 (3 months)

Salary placement based on experience and educational level for placement on the Alabama State Salary Schedule D1. Additional salary may be available, but is not guaranteed, for summer employment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach classes and/or labs as assigned. Teach at varied times and places and in varied formats based on student demand; day, evening, or weekend, at any campus/instructional site deemed necessary, including dual enrollment, traditional classroom, hybrid or web format.
  • Assist students as an advisor in developing class schedules, program planning, and career counseling.
  • Maintain updated course syllabi for all courses taught and provide a syllabus to all students enrolled in the class. Each faculty member will adhere to the course syllabus.
  • Review and recommend revision of curriculum periodically and provide input to the college-wide curriculum committee.
  • Assist in the development of course offerings each term.
  • Maintain all records as needed for the instructional program.
  • Participate on college-wide committees as assigned.
  • Provide academic and career advice to students and promote student leadership and enrichment experiences.
  • Provide library information to students.
  • Maintain professional conduct in dealing with students, staff, administration, faculty, and the college community.
  • Maintain safe practices in classroom and laboratory.
  • Actively recruit students for the program and the College.
  • Collect, maintain, and submit accurate class records including grades, attendance rosters, absences, withdrawal, and/or class drop information to appropriate offices.
  • Compile and dispense necessary reports, in a timely manner.
  • Participate in the planning and budgeting processes of the division.
  • Assist in the coordination of the institutional effectiveness plan.
  • Participate in and facilitate advisory committee meetings.
  • Promote positive and productive relationships with service area businesses, industries, and agencies.
  • Attend faculty and staff meetings.
  • Be prompt and punctual in reporting for work. Maintain assigned office hours.
  • Participate in approved professional development activities through professional organizations, seminars, and programs designed to maintain and improve skills.
  • Become familiar with institutional policies and procedures as outlined in the College Catalog, Employee Handbook, and the ACCS Policy Publications; and follow such policies and procedures.
  • Assume all other duties assigned by the Division Chair and/or College Administration.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Associate's degree in applicable discipline area preferred. If a candidate has an associate's degree, three years of full-time experience as a practitioner in automotive field is required. Relevant skills in automotive are required.
  • If a candidate has no associate's degree, five years of full-time working experience as an in-field practitioner with relevant skills is required, and the candidate must complete an in-field associate's degree within the first 35 months of employment.
  • Teaching experience is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of automotive maintenance and repair, including engine repair, automatic transmission, manual transmission and drive train, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance.
  • Ability to use basic automotive tools and equipment to tune engines using an oscilloscope, adjust brakes, repair and service air conditioning, and align wheels.
  • Documented evidence in the proficiency of use current educational technologies in the classroom including word processing, spreadsheet, database, and/or presentation software.
  • Ability to recruit student to the program, and keep the program current and viable.
  • Ability to conduct individual and small group instruction.
  • Ability to learn new teaching pedagogy, and new software, as required.
  • An understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and mission of the community college system.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers, vendors, with diverse students, parents, the general public and others having business with the school.
  • Commitment to all students, including those of diverse ages, cultures, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Successful problem solving skills.
  • Successful college teaching experience.

Sick Leave

All regular full-time instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is equivalent to 7 hours per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Retirement

The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. Tuition Assistance

This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:
