Job Summary The Fleet Maintenance Group is seeking an Automotive Mechanic for the Herndon, VA shop. This position can be placed in a Step 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, or 11 level based on experience and assessment.

The starting range based on the level / step is $24.09 - $30.63/hr, with pay going up to $47.96 after progressing through training.

The essential job duties and responsibilities of this position will include the ability to diagnose, repair, and perform maintenance on the many different types of equipment in our fleet. This includes both on- and off-road equipment with diesel and gasoline engines, automatic and manual transmissions. To complete some or all of this positions essential job duties, the successful candidate will be required to utilize equipment with strict weight restrictions, including, but not limited to ladders, scaffolding, and aerial lifts and therefore may not exceed a weight of 290lbs.

More specifically, the successful candidate will develop skills to prepare themselves for further advancement in the Automotive Mechanic Development Program in the Fleet Maintenance department.

Specific Automotive Mechanic functions include but are not limited to the following activities:

  • Working with our customers in the Construction, Operations, Substation, Transmission, and other departments to understand their needs and issues.
  • Performing various Preventative Maintenance tasks, including oil and other fluid changes, tire changes, etc.
  • Troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing light duty vehicles, diesel engines, hydraulic equipment, drivetrains, air brakes, etc.
  • Ensuring safety rules and regulations are observed in the garage or other worksite.
  • Leveraging technology to analyze issues, track customer needs, time spent on maintenance / repair tasks, parts used during maintenance/repair activities, etc.

Overtime will be required to support the needs of our customers due to peak or critical work periods providing additional earnings potential. Majority of work will be performed in a shop environment, although outdoor response is sometimes needed. Work associated with this position can be very physically demanding.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Required Qualifications:

  • HS diploma or GED
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid drivers license; must obtain a CDL learners permit within 1 month of employment and a CDL prior to 6 months of employment.
  • Minimum of 2-year experience as a professional Automotive Mechanic (A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications.)
  • General knowledge of gas combustion engines, diesel engines, air conditioning
  • Must possess basic hand tools or willing to purchase tools needed to perform the job.
  • Pass drug screening and background checks and be eligible to obtain a state inspection license after an appropriate amount of time in training program.
  • Due to weight limits on equipment, weight restriction of 290 pounds applies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional combustion engine mechanic or graduate of a recognized Automotive Mechanic Training school
  • Experience in electrical systems diagnostics and repair
  • Experience in Air Conditioning diagnostics, repair, and A/C certification
  • Experience in Engine ignition diagnostics and repair
  • Experience in hydraulics
  • Heavy Truck certification
  • State Inspection license
  • Commercial Drivers license
  • Career and Technical Education Center (CTE) graduates
  • Military veterans
  • Candidates with an associate degree in a related field or major

Education Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
