Purpose
The City of Savannah is committed to developing our future automotive mechanic workforce. We support a progressive trainee program that will prepare you to become a certified automotive mechanic while working in our Fleet Services facility.
As an Automotive Services Mechanic A, you will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of City vehicles and equipment. This is the advanced journey-level classification in the series. Employees in this role serve as lead technicians and subject matter experts for the repair and maintenance of complex vehicle and equipment systems. Work involves in-depth diagnostics, rebuilding of major components, troubleshooting advanced electronic and multiplex systems, and performing field repairs under minimal supervision.

Essential Job Functions
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED with a minimum of six months of vocational training in automotive/vehicle mechanics and engine repair.
Three years of experience in vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance.
Must possess and maintain a valid state Commercial Drivers License with an acceptable driving history or must obtain CDL within six months of employment.
Must hold at least four (4) ASE certifications.
Work Schedule: M-F 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of shop safety guidelines.
Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of City vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge of techniques, practices, procedures, test equipment, and documentation used in all aspects of maintenance for automotive vehicles, trucks, fire apparatus, and other fleet equipment.
Skill in diagnosing and repairing equipment failures.
Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work.
Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
Skill in the interpretation of manuals and schematics.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Minimum Standards
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: Work is performed under the limited supervision of the supervisor.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include standard operating procedures, safety guidelines, and city policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: Requires the application of a variety of procedures, policies and/or precedents, and moderate analytic ability in adapting standard methods to fit facts and conditions.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: Daily actions or services affect individual clients/citizens; activity has a moderate impact on specific cases in the service area.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Outside and inside contacts to carry out organization programs or occasional contacts with officials at higher levels on matters requiring cooperation, explanation, and persuasion, or work requiring enforcement of laws, ordinances, policies, and procedures.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide services, and resolve problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: One or more disagreeable elements (dust, heat, fumes, cold, noise, vibration or wetness) are regularly present and objectionable, or continuing exposure to work situations that could result in incapacitating accidents or periodic exposure to situations involving hazards that could result in total disability, critical illness, or loss of life.
