Position Summary

The Opportunity: Skagit Valley College (SVC) is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Automotive Technology. The successful candidate will demonstrate technical expertise, exceptional coaching or teaching skills, and enthusiasm for the subject matter.

Candidates should be able and excited to teach a wide variety of lectures and laboratory-based coursework in the department. Faculty at SVC respect and work effectively with students, colleagues, staff, and others in a campus climate that promotes innovative teaching, an engaging learning environment, and a strong focus on improving success rates for all students.

SVC Automotive Faculty typically teach an equivalent of 15- 18 instructional units per quarter (3 classes) and participate in college service. This position is expected to begin in Fall Quarter, September 2026.

This position is based primarily at the Mount Vernon Campus; however, Instructors may be called upon to teach at the Whidbey Island Campus located in Oak Harbor.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom and hands-on instruction in Automotive Technology courses; Course content includes all Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) areas of automotive technology, emphasizing engine performance (drivability), alternative power sources (hybrid/electric and diesel engines), and AC systems;

  • Incorporate an inclusive and welcoming approach to teaching and learning;

  • Conduct ongoing development, assessment, and revision of curriculum that reflects innovations and advances in Automotive Technology;

  • Create a positive learning environment for students using multiple hands-on teaching methods to support and enhance student success;

  • Work collaboratively with SVC faculty from other fields to develop contextualized and interdisciplinary courses that boost student engagement and success;

  • Create a positive learning environment for students using multiple teaching methods to support and enhance student success;

  • Collaborate with other disciplines to increase enrollment and support student retention in the program;

  • Develop, monitor, and assess student learning outcomes and fully participate in the college's program review process;

  • Develop, assess, and analyze program outcomes for the purpose of program improvement and enhanced student learning;

  • Develop, monitor, and assess courses that meet ASE Education Foundation standards and prepare students for ASE certification using principles of Universal Design;

  • Practice continued professional development as required by ASE Education Foundation (minimum 20 hours a year);

  • Teach hybrid, distance education, or Integrated Basic Education Skills Training (I- BEST);

  • Conduct program outreach by leading information sessions for prospective students, assisting with marketing and recruitment activities, and coordinating with high school teachers and administrators;

  • Plan, facilitate, and participate in advisory committee meetings;

  • Participate in unit, department, and other College activities, including College governance;

  • Contribute to departmental leadership as needed, with the potential to serve as department chair;

  • Work collaboratively as part of the Automotive Technology department team;

  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree, or equivalent education or higher, in Automotive Technology, or ability to complete an associate degree within four (4) years;
  • Classroom teaching or industry training experience;
  • Five (5) years of recent full-time experience in the Automotive Service industry as a technician or closely related field or equivalent combination of education, training, and field experience totaling seven (7) years;
  • ASE Master Level Certification, L1 & L3, or ability to obtain these certifications by the start of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree or higher;
  • Higher education teaching experience, especially in a community and technical college setting;
  • Evidence of industry training/professional development within the last three (3) years;
  • Engine Machinist experience;
  • Experience training or leading teams of technicians;
  • First-hand experience in multiple settings and roles: dealerships, independent shops, management, service advising, etc.;
  • Other relevant certifications and training in automotive, marine, diesel, agricultural, or related fields.

Salary, Benefits, Conditions of Employment, Application Procedure, About SVC

Salary and Benefits:

  • Initial base annual salary placement for 2026-2027 ranges from $76,953 to $102,604, plus an additional $5,000 High-Demand Salary Enhancement for a standard 172-day contract. The salary enhancement is incorporated in the salary range within the posting for the purposes of demonstrating the potential salary. The High-Demand Salary Enhancement is contingent upon the continuation of the HB2158 legislative funding and the amount dispersed to the college by the State Board. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale in which placement on the salary structure is in accordance with the SVC Federation of Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  • A standard 172-day contract is written annually for the period of September to June. Late contracts will be prorated on the basis of work days remaining in the contract year.

  • This position is exempt from the overtime pay requirements of The Fair Labor Standards Act.

  • This is a union-represented position subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale in which placement on the salary structure is in accordance with the SVC Federation of Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  • Salary, retirement, medical, and insurance benefits are provided in accordance with state regulations and may be subject to change in accordance with legislative mandates and collective bargaining agreements.
