About the Position
This job opportunity is with the Air Operations Division in HINDS COUNTY. The Aircraft Mechanic II performs advanced technical work involving the inspection, maintenance, repair, overhaul, modification, and preventive maintenance of rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft operated by the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (MDPS). This position is primarily responsible for maintaining mission-ready helicopters that support statewide law enforcement operations, search and rescue missions, homeland security initiatives, disaster response, criminal investigations, executive transportation, and other public safety missions. The incumbent performs complex maintenance and troubleshooting of aircraft mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, avionics, rotor, and turbine engine systems while ensuring all maintenance is completed in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, manufacturer maintenance manuals, Airworthiness Directives (ADs), Service Bulletins (SBs), and departmental policies. Preference will be given to applicants with extensive experience maintaining Airbus Helicopters (formerly Eurocopter), including AS350/H125, H130, H135, H145, EC120, EC130, EC135, EC145, or similar aircraft. This position requires exceptional technical knowledge, sound judgment, and a strong commitment to aviation safety while supporting the operational readiness of MDPS aircraft throughout the State of Mississippi. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, and overhaul of MDPS rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft. Perform preventive maintenance in accordance with FAA regulations, manufacturer maintenance manuals, approved maintenance programs, and departmental maintenance schedules. Inspect and maintain turbine engines, rotor systems, transmissions, gearboxes, rotor heads, swashplates, drive shafts, flight controls, hydraulic systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, environmental systems, and landing gear. Diagnose and repair mechanical, structural, hydraulic, electrical, and avionics malfunctions using specialized aircraft diagnostic equipment. Perform annual, 100-hour, phase, progressive, and special inspections as required by FAA regulations and manufacturer recommendations. Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mission-specific aviation equipment including: Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) camera systems Searchlights Tactical communication systems Public address systems Aviation radios GPS and moving-map navigation systems Satellite tracking equipment Digital mission recording systems External cargo equipment and law enforcement mission accessories Remove and replace aircraft engines, transmissions, rotor blades, gearboxes, flight control components, hydraulic pumps, and other major aircraft assemblies. Perform aircraft rigging, flight control adjustments, and post-maintenance operational checks. Conduct aircraft weight and balance calculations following maintenance or equipment installation. Maintain aircraft logbooks, maintenance records, inspection documentation, component tracking records, and FAA-required maintenance entries. Research aircraft maintenance manuals, illustrated parts catalogs, service bulletins, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and technical publications. Coordinate major repairs, warranty work, and component overhauls with FAA-certified repair stations and aircraft manufacturers. Inspect incoming aircraft parts to ensure FAA traceability, certification, and airworthiness. Maintain inventory of aircraft parts, consumable supplies, tools, and specialized maintenance equipment. Assist in aircraft recovery following mechanical failures, accidents, or emergency landings. Maintain hangars, maintenance facilities, and shop equipment in accordance with OSHA, FAA, and departmental safety standards. Provide technical guidance and mentoring to lower-level mechanics and maintenance personnel. Respond to after-hours maintenance emergencies as required to support law enforcement flight operations. Travel throughout Mississippi when necessary to provide maintenance support for aircraft operating away from the primary maintenance facility. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Typically requires a High School Diploma or high school equivalency and 6+ years of experience and possess a F.A.A. Airframe and Power plant Mechanics Certificate with an Inspection Authorization (IA).
