About Us:

We're a fast-growing, privately held insurance company on a path to become a leading U.S. retail platform. We believe every client and customer relationship holds the potential to grow into something greater-and the same is true for our people. As we grow, we're redefining how great talent connects with meaningful work-enabling our ambitious strategy while building a culture of high performance, creativity, and partnership. If you're energized by providing independent risk insight, challenging complex models and assumptions, and influencing risk-aware decision-making across a life insurance organization, this role offers the opportunity to do your best work.

About the Role:

We're looking for an AVP of Risk Management to support and strengthen the company's Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework. In this role, you'll be a key independent voice in risk oversight, with a focus on insurance, actuarial, financial, operational, and model risks.

Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer, you'll lead model risk management and validation efforts, provide thoughtful challenge to business activities, and partner across actuarial, finance, investments, and product teams to ensure risks are effectively identified, measured, and managed within the organization's risk appetite. This is a highly visible role requiring strong technical expertise, leadership presence, and the ability to influence senior stakeholders in a complex, regulated environment.

What You'll Do:

Enterprise Risk Management

  • Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Companys ERM framework.
  • Monitor and assess key enterprise risks, including insurance, market, credit, liquidity, operational, strategic, and model risks.
  • Evaluate emerging risks and provide recommendations to senior management and risk committees.
  • Support annual risk assessments and Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA) activities, as applicable.

Model Risk Management and Validation

  • Lead independent validations of actuarial, financial, and risk management models.
  • Review model development, methodology, assumptions, limitations, controls, and governance processes.
  • Assess model changes, simplifications, overlays, management adjustments, and implementation risks.
  • Develop and maintain validation tools, benchmarking approaches, and independent testing methodologies.
  • Ensure compliance with model risk management policies, standards, and regulatory expectations.

Risk Governance and Reporting

  • Prepare and present risk assessments and validation findings to management, executive committees, and Boards as appropriate.
  • Support reporting to risk committees and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Track remediation activities and validate closure of model and risk findings.
  • Maintain risk policies, standards, and procedures consistent with industry best practices.

Capital and Financial Risk Oversight

  • Partner with actuarial, finance, investments, and product teams to evaluate capital, earnings, and balance sheet risks.
  • Review stress testing, scenario analysis, and sensitivity testing results.
  • Assess the impact of new products, reinsurance transactions, and strategic initiatives on the Companys risk profile.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Provide effective challenge while maintaining strong business partnerships.
  • Mentor and develop junior risk professionals.
  • Manage consultants or external validation resources as needed.
  • Promote a strong risk culture throughout the organization.

Core Competencies

  • Strategic Risk Thinking & Decision Support: Applies forward‑looking risk assessment and structured analysis to inform business decisions and enterprise risk positioning
  • Risk Assessment & Analytical Problem Solving: Evaluates complex risk exposures across actuarial, financial, and operational domains, translating findings into actionable insights
  • Regulatory & Governance Expertise: Demonstrates strong knowledge of insurance regulatory frameworks, risk governance structures, and committee reporting expectations
  • Executive Presence & Communication: Effectively communicates complex risk topics with clarity and credibility to senior leaders, committees, and stakeholders
  • Influence & Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Builds strong partnerships across business and control functions while providing independent, constructive challenge
  • Project Leadership & Execution: Leads multiple high‑impact initiatives with strong organization, prioritization, and follow‑through in a dynamic environment

What You Bring:

Required

  • Bachelors degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • ASA, FSA, CFA, FRM, or equivalent professional designation.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in life insurance, annuities, actuarial, risk management, model governance, or related functions.
  • Demonstrated expertise in actuarial modeling, valuation, ALM, capital management, or model validation.
  • Strong knowledge of life insurance and annuity products.
  • Experience with actuarial modeling platforms such as MG-ALFA, ARCVAL, Prophet, AXIS, Moses, or similar systems.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and project management skills.
  • Experience presenting findings to senior leadership and governance committees.

Preferred

  • FSA designation.
  • Prior leadership or people-management experience.
  • Experience supporting U.S. statutory, GAAP, IFRS, or economic capital frameworks.
  • Familiarity with ORSA, NAIC guidance, model risk management frameworks, and insurance regulatory expectations.

What We Offer:

  • A collaborative, inclusive environment that values authenticity, accountability, and partnership
  • The opportunity to join the company at an exciting stage of growth, where colleagues are empowered to build what's next
  • A variable compensation package with a base range of $215K-$235K
  • A competitive benefits package including comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage; an HSA and 401(k) company match; paid time off; and employer-paid life and disability insurance
  • Remote/Hybrid work arrangement
