AVP, Senior Underwriting Officer, Large Construction

You''ll work with some of the largest and most complex construction risks in the country, delivering primary casualty coverage (workers'' compensation, general liability, auto) for annual practice and wrap-up programs. This role focuses on our Large Construction portfolio, which serves many of the largest contractors in the US, backed by more than 100 years of construction underwriting experience and deep OCIP and CCIP program expertise.

You''ll partner with the leadership team, bring deep technical expertise to the table, and serve as the go-to point of contact for frontline underwriting teams on questions, key decisions, and referrals. You''ll also help shape and carry out portfolio strategies that keep performance strong and moving in the right direction.

Responsibilities:

• Provide expert technical underwriting guidance and formal referral approval across multiple lines of business (auto, general liability, workers'' compensation, and lead/excess) in Large Construction. Work independently with field underwriters and directly with underwriting managers on mandatory referrals and voluntary consultations.
• Keep primary casualty and excess placements aligned and consistent, including across owner-controlled and contractor-controlled wrap-up programs (OCIP/CCIP) where the entire job site is covered under one consolidated program. Support leadership on transactions and act as a trusted advisor on exposure, coverage analysis, and key pricing and financial decisions within your authority.
• Monitor the frameworks that guide underwriting decisions, such as referrals and technical reviews, and recommend improvements. Regularly evaluate portfolio performance in Large Construction, working with underwriting leaders to spot what''s driving results, risks, and opportunities.
• Drive underwriting technical excellence across Large Construction, partnering with underwriting leaders to identify and resolve issues.
• Work with underwriting leaders to spot opportunities for product and service improvements and underwriter development, such as new skills or tools, and coordinate the resources to make them happen.
• Model strong collaboration across teams, stakeholders, and partners, including underwriting support, claims, actuarial, and NA product teams.
• Build and maintain relationships with key brokers and reinsurance/facultative partners. Join customer meetings, stewardship discussions, and new business presentations as needed.

Qualifications

• Expert-level knowledge of all aspects of coverage forms, exclusions, and exposure.
• Pricing, structure, rating, rating plans, loss forecasting, credit risk, market knowledge, preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of and experience operating within several different industry segments - experience with and knowledge of Construction programs key; insurance operations; claims, finance and actuarial concepts; regulatory environment; loss control/risk engineering; reinsurance; account management; product development; and industry trends.
• Must be a skilled collaborator who is willing to assess all sides of an issue, bring in others with expertise, and independently execute and advance the collaboration model.
• Other professional skills required include: superior communication skills (written, verbal, presentation, listening); approachability; tact; coaching/development; analyzing and problem solving; relationship and service driven; clear solutions orientation and commitment to achieving segment operational and financial objectives; negotiation skills; and demonstrated ability to consistently and positively influence others both internally and externally (brokers/customers) as required.
• As normally acquired through a related bachelor''s degree, 10 or more years of relevant experience that includes underwriting, claims, reinsurance, coaching/developing others, working with brokers/agents and current with market trends and developments.

The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role.
