About TCNJ

The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) is a highly selective institution that is consistently recognized as one of the top comprehensive colleges in the nation. Founded in 1855 as the New Jersey State Normal School, TCNJ maintains the eighth highest four-year graduation rate among all public colleges and universities. It is ranked by Money as one of the top 15 public colleges "most likely to pay off financially," and U.S. News & World Report rates it the No. 1 public institution among regional universities in the northeast.

Position Overview:

The Center for Global Engagement is seeking candidates for Study Abroad Assistants. These positions serve as peer mentors and the administrative backbone for our international programs. You will bridge the gap between curious students and their dream destinations, helping them navigate the application process while keeping our office operations running smoothly. We are looking for assistants to help support each of the key programs within the education abroad portfolio: faculty-led, study center and exchange, and work closely alongside the appropriate CGE advisors.

Responsibilities: USE BULLETS

  • Peer Advising: Conduct "first-step" advising sessions to help students explore program options, understand credit transfers, and navigate scholarship opportunities.

  • Outreach & Promotion: Give short presentations to classrooms or student organizations; assist in staffing study abroad fairs and information tables.

  • Administrative Management: Maintain and update student files and application databases; follow up with students missing materials, ensure all pre-departure paperwork (visas, insurance, emergency forms) is complete.

  • Digital Presence: Create engaging graphic design content for program promotion, highlighting student testimonials from abroad and upcoming application timelines & deadlines.

  • Resource Curation: Keep the study abroad resource library and study abroad portal & CGE website up-to-date with current program brochures and travel advisories.

Learning Objectives:

  • Intercultural communication
  • Public speaking
  • Strategic marketing
  • Data & resource management

Required Qualifications: USE BULLETS

  • Comfortable speaking in front of small groups and engaging with diverse student populations.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace & Canva and the ability to learn application management software (e.g., Terra Dotta).
  • Must be meticulous with paperwork and deadlines-small errors can have big travel implications.

Preferred Qualifications: USE BULLETS

  • Preferably a student who has studied abroad or has a strong interest in international relations/cultures.
  • Ability to support students who may be nervous or overwhelmed by the prospect of traveling abroad

Persons with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations in order to perform the essential functions of the position. If the requested accommodation(s) cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, the applicant may not be eligible for the position.

Employer Qualifications

Employment at TCNJ is contingent upon the successful completion of an applicable background check, reference checks, and verification of identity and authorization to work in the United States (Form I-9).

Accommodation:

Applicants who require a reasonable accommodation to apply or interview should contact the hiring department listed on this application.

How to Apply

Qualified candidates should apply online and submit a resume. Applications will be considered until a viable finalist has been found.

The College is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive campus community that respects and uplifts individuals from all backgrounds.
