Sr. Azure AVD Engineer, Systems Engineering, Hybrid, Baptist Medical Center Metro Square
The Senior Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day engineering, support, maintenance, and optimization of Baptist Health's enterprise AVD environment. This role provides advanced technical expertise across Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows desktop infrastructure, Microsoft 365, Active Directory, Entra ID, Intune, IGEL, FSLogix, Imprivata, application delivery, and related Azure technologies to maintain a secure, reliable, and high-performing virtual desktop platform. Daily responsibilities include reviewing host-pool health, session density, disconnected sessions, capacity, logon behavior, profile performance, application availability, overnight alerts, maintenance activity, and individual session-host performance. The Senior AVD Engineer investigates escalated incidents, identifies whether issues are related to AVD, endpoint configuration, identity, networking, applications, profiles, or peripherals, and works with the appropriate technical teams to drive issues to resolution.
The Senior AVD Engineer also supports the full lifecycle of application and infrastructure changes entering the AVD environment. This includes building and validating DEV and PRD session hosts, deploying updated base images, configuring host pools and RemoteApps, supporting application-owner testing and UAT, preparing pilot deployments, validating production releases, and troubleshooting application and peripheral functionality such as Epic, Dragon, OBIX, Lab applications, Teladoc, PACS, scanners, microphones, audio, USB devices, and other clinical workflows. The engineer works closely with Enterprise Architecture, SRE, Field Engineering, Service Desk, Network, Security, Clinical Informatics, application owners, and vendors to ensure technical dependencies are understood and new solutions are supportable before broader deployment.
Serving as a senior technical resource, the Senior AVD Engineer independently resolves complex infrastructure and end-user computing issues while also supporting active deployments and enterprise initiatives. The engineer may assist Field Engineering during onsite deployments, validate user and application assignments, troubleshoot pilot devices, review image and configuration differences, support production cutovers, and determine whether identified issues are blocking or can be addressed through follow-up remediation. The role requires balancing immediate operational support with ongoing project work, application onboarding, platform upgrades, migrations, patching, capacity planning, and other changes occurring across the AVD environment. A key responsibility of the Senior AVD Engineer is improving the environment rather than repeatedly resolving the same issue. This includes identifying recurring support trends, developing standard images and configurations, improving automation for host builds, patching, reboots, and validation, optimizing session-host capacity and cost, documenting technical standards and runbooks, and reducing one-off workstation or application configurations. The engineer communicates technical risks, dependencies, defects, and next steps clearly while providing technical guidance to other engineers and support teams. The overall goal is to maintain a stable production environment while continuously making Baptist Health's AVD platform more reliable, standardized, scalable, automated, cost-effective, and easier to support.
As the Sr. Azure AVD Engineer, you will be responsible for:
Experience with the following:
Identify recurring issues and opportunities for automation, develop technical standards and runbooks, improve deployment and maintenance processes, optimize capacity and cost, and provide technical guidance to support teams and other engineers.
