Job Description

Band Teacher

  • Reports to: Building Principals
  • Compensation: Per OEA Master Contract

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate required.
  • Must hold or be eligible for the appropriate Michigan Music Education endorsement (JX).
  • Experience teaching middle and/or high school instrumental music preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instrumental music pedagogy, rehearsal techniques, and performance preparation.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and classroom management skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, professionalism, and continuous improvement.

Position Requirements & Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver engaging, standards-based instrumental music instruction for students in grades 5-12.
  • Develop and implement curriculum aligned with the Michigan Academic Standards for Music and district expectations.
  • Foster student growth in instrumental performance, music literacy, music theory, creativity, and appreciation of music.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic, musical, social, and emotional needs of all learners.
  • Assess student progress regularly and provide timely, meaningful feedback to students and parents/guardians.
  • Direct and oversee the district's middle school and high school concert band programs.
  • Plan, organize, and direct the Olivet High School Marching Band, including rehearsals, halftime performances, parades, and other community events.
  • Prepare students for participation in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) Band Festival, Solo & Ensemble Festival, and other local, regional, and state performance opportunities.
  • Coordinate and direct pep band and jazz band performances in support of school athletic events.
  • Recruit and retain students in the band program by fostering a positive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment that encourages lifelong participation in music.
  • Collaborate with elementary music staff to promote the growth and continuity of the district's instrumental music program.
  • Maintain an organized, safe, and effective rehearsal environment and ensure the proper care, inventory, and maintenance of instruments, uniforms, music library, and equipment.
  • Coordinate instrument rentals, music purchases, repairs, uniforms, fundraising activities, and performance logistics in accordance with district procedures.
  • Plan and conduct concerts, performances, and community engagement events that showcase student achievement and promote school pride.
  • Incorporate instructional technology and digital resources to enhance music instruction and student engagement.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, staff, administrators, booster organizations, and community members regarding student progress, performances, and program activities.
  • Attend and actively participate in faculty meetings, professional development, school events, concerts, competitions, festivals, and other assigned responsibilities.
  • Serve as a positive representative of Olivet Community Schools in all interactions with students, families, community members, vendors, and fellow employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or designee.
