Magnolia Marine Transport Co. in Vicksburg currently has an opening for a Barge Maintenance Assistant. The position is responsible for initiating and maintaining all aspects of barge maintenance and inspections on MMT barges while ensuring compliance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and company safety standards. The individual plays a key role in supporting safe and efficient marine operations through maintenance coordination, inspections, repairs, and regulatory compliance.

Barge Maintenance Assistant Responsibilities

  • Responsible for U.S. Coast Guard inspections of MMT barges
  • Serve as backup Vetting Coordinator for customer inspections of MMT barges
  • Maintain proper documentation aboard all MMT barges
  • Review and maintain current hull inspection reports from vessel personnel
  • Perform light maintenance and repairs to MMT barges
  • Maintain current hose and pipeline test records
  • Coordinate all dry docking and structural internal U.S. Coast Guard inspections
  • Coordinate maintenance and repairs for MMT barges
  • Responsible for purchasing barge equipment through the MMT purchasing department
  • Remain current on U.S. Coast Guard regulations for tank barges
  • Teach barge maintenance duties to boat crews through MMT training courses
  • Assist in shop maintenance and cleanup
  • Backup Marine Boilerman and assume those responsibilities when needed
  • Ensure a safe and efficient work environment through periodic job inspections and enforcement of safety requirements
  • Report unsafe or hazardous conditions and nonconformities to supervisor

Barge Maintenance Assistant Skills/Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in tank barge transportation
  • Must possess a U.S. Coast Guard Tankerman Document with at least two years of experience
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Valid TWIC card required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate projects
  • Extensive knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard regulations pertaining to bulk oil shipment on inland waters
  • Extensive knowledge of tank barge design and equipment
  • Basic mechanical skills required
  • Must possess a Certificate of Completion for a Shipyard Competent Person
  • Extensive travel and overnight stays required
  • Strong commitment to safety and operational excellence

The person selected must be self-motivated with strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills and successfully complete all required pre-employment screenings and evaluations.

Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check. A clean MVR is required.
