    Job Description

    Bariatric Surgery

Patients do not come to you for a procedure. They come to reclaim mobility, metabolic health, and years of life. This role exists to deliver durable weight-loss and comorbidity outcomes through careful selection, precise surgery, and a program that does not lose people after discharge. Success is measured in safer operations, fewer readmissions, and patients who stay on the path you set with them.

    Performance Objectives

    • Build and run a high-volume bariatric practice that meets or exceeds program volume, case-mix, and accreditation standards within the first year.
    • Select candidates using evidence-based criteria so operative risk, expected benefit, and patient readiness are clear before the first incision.
    • Perform primary and revisional bariatric procedures with complication, leak, and 30-day readmission rates at or below national benchmarks.
    • Cut length of stay and preventable returns by standardizing enhanced-recovery pathways with anesthesia, nursing, and nutrition.
    • Own longitudinal outcomes: track excess-weight loss, diabetes remission, and follow-up completion at 30 days, 6 months, and 1 year, and close gaps you find.
    • Lead multidisciplinary case review so dietitians, behavioral health, and medicine align on one plan before and after surgery.
    • Teach residents, advanced practice providers, or OR teams so technique, documentation, and safety habits hold when you are not in the room.

    Environment & Resources

You will practice inside an established surgical service with dedicated bariatric ORs, clinic access, and a coordinator who owns scheduling and registry data. Anesthesia, nutrition, behavioral health, and medicine are already at the table. You report to the surgical service leader, with authority over your block time, pathway design, and case selection. Support includes accredited-program infrastructure, outcomes dashboards, and protected time for clinic, cases, and follow-up—not a solo practice bolted onto general surgery.

    Essential Qualifications

    • Board certification or eligibility in general surgery, with fellowship training in bariatric or minimally invasive surgery.
    • Independent experience in sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and revisional cases, including management of leaks, strictures, and nutritional failure.
    • A documented record of low complication and readmission rates, or a clear plan to reach benchmark within a defined case volume.
    • Comfort leading multidisciplinary selection conferences and saying no when surgery is the wrong next step.
    • Active medical license and ability to obtain hospital privileges and accreditation-program credentials without delay.

    Role Selling Points

    • Outcomes, not RVUs alone, define success—volume is paired with follow-up completion and comorbidity improvement.
    • A real team is already staffed: coordinator, nutrition, behavioral health, and a data feed you can act on.
    • Block time and clinic access are sized for a growing bariatric service, not leftover general-surgery slots.
    • You shape pathways and case mix rather than inheriting someone else’s playbook unchanged.
    • Teaching is part of the job, with time and trainees to match—not an unpaid add-on.

    Call to Action

If you can show safer surgery, tighter follow-up, and patients who are healthier a year later, apply with a brief note on your case mix, outcomes, and the program standard you will not compromise.
