Purpose: The Barista is responsible for providing great customer service, fulfilling food and beverage orders, and completing sales transactions within a certified coffee establishment. This role also ensures the establishment operates efficiently by assisting with cleaning, food preparation, seating customers, stocking, and maintaining inventory. This is a non-exempt position and typically reports to the General Manager.

Essential Functions:
  • Provides exceptional customer service; greets all guests with a smile and friendly disposition while taking food and beverage orders, answers questions about menu items and offers recommendations, calls guests by name, and thanks them for their order before they leave
  • Prepares and delivers quality beverages and food products consistently to all guests by adhering to recipe and presentation standards
  • Operates a cash register and receive payment from guests, while following all brand, HMSHost customer service, and cash handling policies and procedures
  • Keeps the store clean, stocked, organized; decorates customer display areas so they are aesthetically pleasing and up to brand standards
  • Follows operational policies and procedures, including those for health & safety and security
Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Work Environment:
  • Professional Experience:
  • Must have one year of customer service experience
  • Preferred: has at least one year of experience working in a high-volume coffee shop
  • Preferred: previous cash handling experience
  • Specialized Skillset/Competencies/Traits:
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills; demonstrates the ability to interact with customers and co-workers enthusiastically
  • Requires the ability to speak, read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and policy documents, as well as converse comfortably with customers
  • Requires the ability to learn and maintain knowledge of certified coffee establishment products and procedures
  • Physical Requirements:
  • Requires the ability to bend, twist, walk and stand to perform normal job functions
  • Ability to stand/walk for long periods of time
  • Can perform repetitive motions
  • Has the ability to bend, stoop or kneel
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Use of hand dexterity for writing, grabbing, pulling, twisting, shaking

Every day, we go to work hoping to do two things: share great coffee with our friends and help make the world a little better. It was true when the first Starbucks opened in 1971, and it’s just as true today.

Back then, the company was a single store in Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market. From just a narrow storefront, Starbucks offered some of the world’s finest fresh-roasted whole bean coffees. The name, inspired by Moby Dick, evoked the romance of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of the early coffee traders.

In 1981, Howard Schultz (Starbucks chairman and chief executive officer) had first walked into a Starbucks store. From his first cup of Sumatra, Howard was drawn into Starbucks and joined a year later.

In 1983, Howard traveled to Italy and became captivated with Italian coffee bars and the romance of the coffee experience. He had a vision to bring the Italian coffeehouse tradition back to the United States. A place for conversation and a sense of community. A third place between work and home. He left Starbucks for a short period of time to start his own Il Giornale coffeehouses and returned in August 1987 to purchase Starbucks with the help of local investors.

From the beginning, Starbucks set out to be a different kind of company. One that not only celebrated coffee and the rich tradition, but that also brought a feeling of connection.
