Job Description

Position Summary

The BLS Instructor is a part-time, hourly position responsible for facilitating American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support courses for learners at the UMKC School of Medicine. Under the supervision of the simulation leadership, the BLS Instructor delivers standardized, high-quality CPR and emergency cardiovascular care instruction in compliance with current AHA curriculum guidelines. This role supports the UMKC SOM mission to provide competency-based training to healthcare learners across the UMKC SOM enterprise.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to deliver clear, effective instruction to diverse learner populations including medical students, nurses, residents, and allied health professionals. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail in documentation, certification tracking, and compliance with AHA standards.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a session-based, variable-schedule environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Obtain AHA BLS Instructor certification within 2 months of hire.
  • Facilitate AHA BLS courses in accordance with current AHA curriculum, including Heart Saver and Healthcare Provider tracks as assigned. Deliver instruction across all course components: didactic review, skills practice, scenario-based learning, and written and skills testing.
  • Prepare course space, equipment, and manikins prior to each session; restore and inspect all equipment after each session and report maintenance needs.
  • Evaluate and document learner competency against AHA performance standards; provide specific, timely feedback to support skill acquisition.
  • Complete and submit course rosters, completion records, and eCard certification documentation per protocol and within required timeframes.
  • Maintain current AHA BLS Instructor certification and complete all required AHA instructor updates and renewals.
  • Complete center instructor orientation and any required alignment or standardization sessions. Adhere to all center policies regarding equipment handling, learner confidentiality, and course administration.

This position is a 12-month, part-time, non-benefit eligible, unranked academic position. Class offerings will vary depending on schedule.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Current AHA BLS Provider certification

Preferred Qualifications

Current AHA BLS Instructor certification in good standing.

Healthcare background or clinical training experience (e.g., RN, EMT, paramedic, medical student, or equivalent).

Previous experience instructing in an academic medical center, simulation center, or clinical education environment.

Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $22 per hour.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
