Basketball Coach/Trainer

Eagan Community Center

Camps/Clinics Pay: $32.232 per hour

Small Group, 1-to-1 Training Pay: $41.846 per hour

Part-Time, Year-Round, Not Benefit Eligible

This part-time, flexible position invites you to lead an exciting youth basketball development program, where youll provide personalized training and foster a love for the game among all athletes aged 7-14. With opportunities to conduct skill-based camps and clinics, youll create a positive and inclusive environment that encourages teamwork and growth.

Working Hours: Hours vary based on scheduled training sessions, camps, and open gym availability. The coach/trainer will only be scheduled when sessions are booked. There is no guaranteed weekly schedule or minimum number of hours.

Essential Position Functions

  • Lead 1-on-1 and small group basketball training sessions, providing individualized feedback and instruction tailored to each player's skill level.
  • Plan and conduct skill-based basketball camps and clinics for youth ages 7-14 on select non-school days and summer.
  • Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment that promotes learning, effort, and teamwork.
  • Demonstrate and teach basketball fundamentals including shooting, dribbling, passing, footwork, and defensive techniques.
  • Serve as a casual coaching resource during designated open gym times, offering guidance, answering questions, and supporting skill development in an informal setting.
  • Communicate clearly with participants, parents, and staff regarding schedules, expectations, and player progress.
  • Set up and clean up equipment for training sessions and camps.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records, incident reports, and program evaluations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support youth programming at the Eagan Community Center.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework in recreation, education, sports management, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience playing and/or coaching basketball, with strong knowledge of fundamental skills and training techniques.
  • Previous experience working with youth in a coaching, mentoring, or teaching capacity.
  • Ability to lead, instruct, and motivate individuals and small groups in a supportive and engaging manner.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be reliable, organized, and able to work independently.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and non-school weekdays.
  • Must pass a background check.

Things that may help you be successful in this role

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree (or progress toward one) in Recreation, Education, Sports Management, Kinesiology, or a related field.
  • Two or more years of experience working with youth in a camp, recreation, or educational setting.
  • Experience developing training plans or coaching youth basketball at the recreational or competitive level.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate coaching strategies and player development for youth ages 7-14.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Basketball coaching certification (e.g., NFHS, PCA) or related training.
  • Experience working in a community center, parks and recreation, or similar public programming environment.
  • Ability to adapt coaching style to meet the needs of players with varying skill levels and learning styles.

Knowledge of:

  • Basketball rules, techniques, and skill development appropriate for youth ages 7-14
  • Principles of positive youth development and inclusive coaching practices
  • Safety practices related to physical activity and sports training

Skills in:

  • Demonstrating and breaking down basketball fundamentals
  • Providing constructive feedback and encouragement to young athletes
  • Creating a supportive and engaging training environment
  • Communicating effectively with youth, parents, and coworkers
  • Adapting drills and training sessions based on participant needs and group size

Ability to:

  • Lead and maintain a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for youth participants.
  • Enforce rules and guidelines in a firm, fair, and positive manner.
  • Remain calm and professional in high-stress or emergency situations.
  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Maintain a positive and professional demeanor in a fast-paced environment.
  • Work flexible hours, including early mornings, afternoons, and full days during seasonal camps.

Supervision

This position works under the general supervision of the Recreation Program Coordinator and may be given work direction by the Facility Supervisor. This position is expected to work independently during training sessions, clinics, and open gym hours, while maintaining open communication with supervisory staff regarding scheduling, program updates, and participant needs.

Physical Requirements

  • While performing duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to hear, talk, stand, walk, bend, run, jump, and move quickly.
  • Speak clearly and project voice in noisy or busy environments.
  • Frequently lift, carry, push and pull equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distant vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily indoors in the office, gymnasium or community center setting.
  • Indoor gym environments with exposure to loud noises and fluctuating temperatures, frequent participant interaction.
  • Flexible hours may include daytime, early evening, or weekend sessions.
