The Battery Engineer with Five (5) or more years of related experience serves as a project engineer with a leadership role in Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) product development programs.  Sparks facility at Teledyne Energy Systems focuses on custom battery design, manufacturing, and testing with a team of about 45 members. The ideal candidate will be a key team member in an R&D organization developing next-generation cell technology for high energy and high power applications. The successful applicant will develop innovative cell designs using commercial, proprietary materials and technologies. This position's responsibilities are establishing processes, experimental models, prototypes for testing, and procedures for manufacturing battery products. The successful candidate will be involved in concept cell designs, implementing experiments (DOEs), building prototypes, analyzing cell performance results, and optimizing products in the manufacturing environment. Expect to spend 20%-30% of your time on the manufacturing floor supporting prototype fabrication and testing for design analysis and validation.

What you will be doing:

  • Develop Li-Ion cell and electrode design to meet the customer-specified electrical requirements for the rechargeable battery.
  • Working experience with advanced battery materials such as high-energy cathode, silicon anode, and wide-temperature electrolytes.
  • Fundamental knowledge of electrochemical characterization techniques is essential.
  • Develop battery products from the first concept design stage, optimize cell performance, validate/qualification testing, and end in a CDR and transition to manufacturing.
  • Lead development phases, including design refinement, validation, and implementation in manufacturing settings.
  • Correlate electrochemical data and process parameters to optimize Li-Ion cell design and performance.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving ability and resolve battery performance/manufacturing issues. The ability to rapidly adapt to changes and promote new ideas to improve the latest/current products.
  • Develop test procedures and implement test plans, as well as analyze the evaluation of data.
  • Actively participate in prototype fabrication and testing for design analysis and validation in the cell manufacturing processes (40-60% of the time will be on the manufacturing floor).
  • Write product specifications, operation procedures, and technical reports, and interface with customers and suppliers.
  • Assume a leadership role in technical projects while working in a team environment.
  • Exceptional organizational, troubleshooting, interpersonal, and leadership skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse team are required.
