Job Summary and Qualifications

Psychiatric Assessment and Referral Services (PARS) clinicians are responsible for all aspects of both telephone and face-to-face crisis intervention/psychiatric triage. They conduct psychiatric assessments which include: history of present illness, safety and risk assessment, family, development, social and medical history, mental status exam; and psychiatric diagnosis. In consult with the covering psychiatrist, the initial treatment plan, including level of care, is determined. In addition, the PARS clinicians assist with grief and other behavioral health consultations as requested by medical floor staff. They are also responsible for ongoing resource and referral development activities.

PARS Clinicians work closely with, behavioral health nursing staff, psychiatry and the Emergency Department staff, coordinating the entire assessment/admission process. For those patients needing alternative services, PARS Clinicians facilitate appropriate disposition (i.e. transfer to another facility, arranging intake appointments).

What will you do in this role:

PARS clinicians provide assessment and triage services to patients who present to any of 6 Emergency Departments in the hospital network. They work in a collegial and collaborative environment, often coordinating care with multiple disciplines and providers. Portsmouth hospital has a robust psychiatric residency program in concert with Tufts University which provides opportunities for ongoing learning and collaboration. Clinicians also consult with patients on the medical floors who have acute behavioral health needs and/or have experienced a significant loss/trauma.

• Respond to callers and patients presenting to the Emergency Department with behavioral health concerns.

Completes biopsychsocial assessment including mental status exam and level of care required in a timely manner.

• Provides information to patients and families regarding behavioral health resources for treatment.

• Performs functions of an Involuntary Emergency Admission as needed, including acting as petitioner when necessary, and attending/following through with the court system for the Probable Cause Hearing.

• Works actively with hospital staff/providers in a liaison capacity around patient evaluations and transfer issues, and provides biopsychosocial assessments when requested by the provider.

• Is knowledgeable of, and practices, all de-escalation techniques. • Obtains informed consent from patients.

• Educates patient regarding Patients Rights. Obtains signature that indicates understanding. Gives copy to patient.

• Coordinates transfer of patients from other facilities for admission to the Behavioral Health Unit.

• Responds to Code Grays as necessary.

• Files abuse reports according to policy as necessary.

• Maintains accurate count of available beds through monitoring daily census. Coordinates and reviews direct referrals and screens for admission to the BHU.

• Assists on patient unit as requested by PARS Coordinator, Nursing Supervisor, Program Director.

What qualifications will you need: 

  • Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW) or related field required. 
  • 1-3 years of relevant work experience
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
