The Scientists in this role will support WDPB by contributing to the development of policy to prevent and control waterborne and environmental diseases in the United States and abroad. Candidate will apply knowledge of behavioral and social science theories, methods, and techniques to the analysis of surveillance data, outbreak investigations, research, and public health issues. This includes developing an understanding of target populations and key demographics at risk for waterborne and environmental diseases, conducting focus groups, and message testing. The candidate will support the development of prevention and control programs, from strategic development through implementation and program evaluation.

Some tasking will include:

  • Provide behavioral science and health promotion message development expertise during responses to waterborne and environmental disease outbreaks
  • Identify and define the behavioral and social science aspects of WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) related public health issues, problems and opportunities through the application of rigorous data collection and behavioral science-based quantitative and qualitative methods as well as statistical techniques
  • Apply behavioral and social science theory, methods, and techniques to develop, implement, and evaluate programs and policies impacting local/state territory, federal or international public health, and health disparities for vulnerable populations
  • Participate in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data using appropriate quantitative or qualitative methods and synthesizes results into written documents and/or oral presentations
  • Assess risks and protective factors for health outcomes in the social and physical environment, including individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and societal levels
  • Contribute to development of prevention and control programs at CDC and in states focused on WASH-related diseases

Requirements:

  • Candidate must be eligible to work in the United States (without sponsorship) and pass background check requirements for access to government facilities
  • Candidate must possess at least a Bachelor's Degree in a related field (preferred candidate will possess a Master's of Public Health or similar)
  • Experience developing data collection techniques, including development and execution of surveys
  • Data Analysis experience using SAS, R, or similar software package for biological or health related applications
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including experience developing and presenting technical information to a diverse audience
