About the Position:

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Benefits Analyst in our Human Resources (HR) Division in Salem, Virginia. The job duties for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Serving as a subject matter expert in employee benefits administration.
  • Providing technical guidance, case management, and program coordination for disability programs, workers' compensation, Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), health and life insurance, retirement plans, deferred compensation, and other state and Agency benefit programs for all sworn and professional staff.
  • Ensuring regulatory compliance, accurate processing, and high‑quality service delivery across all assigned benefits functions.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge:

  • Considerable knowledge of state-level employee benefits administration including:
  • Workers' Compensation;
  • Short Term Disability (STD)/ Long Term Disability (LTD);
  • health and life insurance;
  • flexible spending accounts;
  • retirement programs;
  • deferred compensation; and
  • FMLA

Skills:

  • Strong skills in customer service;
  • communication both orally and in writing in English;
  • time management;
  • research;
  • presentation;
  • problem solving; and
  • Microsoft Office applications.

Abilities:

  • To manage complex benefits cases;
  • interpret policies;
  • apply regulations consistently;
  • meet tight deadlines;
  • maintain confidentiality; and
  • work effectively with employees at all organizational levels.
  • Required experience administering employee benefits programs in a Human Resources environment, including Workers' Compensation, disability benefits, health and life insurance, FMLA, retirement programs, and deferred compensation.
  • Ability to travel periodically throughout the state.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience using HRIS platforms such as Cardinal HCM or Oracle PeopleSoft HCM for benefits and human resources transactions preferred.
  • Professional HR certifications (PHR, SHRM-CP) strongly preferred due to the technical nature of the position.
