Reports to: Superintendent of Schools

Salary: $172,787 per year

Employment Terms: Full-Time, Twelve-month administrative position. Other terms are set by the Board of Education in accordance with the New London Administrators' Education Association contract.

Position Overview: The Middle School Principal provides instructional, curricular, and operational leadership while facilitating district-wide programs and educational programming at the school level. The Principal supports effective programs that enhance student achievement and align with the expectations of the CT Core of Leading.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are not all-inclusive of the Middle School Principal position.

  • Directs the overall management of the school, including academic, co-curricular, behavioral, student, and family engagement programs, while ensuring safe and effective building operations.
  • Provides instructional leadership that drives continuous improvement, supports Tier 1, 2, and 3 instruction and interventions, and advances student academic and social-emotional achievement.
  • Leads, supervises, evaluates, and develops certified and non-certified staff while overseeing staffing, recruitment, professional development, and performance expectations.
  • Cultivates an inclusive, student-focused school culture centered on equity, restorative practices, PBIS, family engagement, and meaningful partnerships with students, families, and the community.
  • Collaborates with district and school leaders to oversee curriculum, special education and multilingual learner programs, master scheduling, budgets, staffing, school improvement goals, and the district's multi-themed Magnet Pathways.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must hold a valid Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) educator certificate with an endorsement in Connecticut Intermediate Administrative/Supervisory Certificate (092)
  • An advanced degree in education or a related field
  • At least five (5) years of successful experience as a classroom teacher
  • At least three (3) years of successful experience in an administrative role
  • Knowledge of Magnet School program development, marketing and administration

Preferred Requirements:

  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish or Haitian Creole highly desirable.
  • Sixth year, doctorate, or another planned program in educational leadership, ELL, or special education
  • Knowledge of inquiry-based teaching and learning
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in a racially and ethnically diverse community
  • Experience in supervising building-level Special Education and English Learners programs and services
  • Extensive experience in education, reflecting successful teaching, and successful school or program leadership, preferably in an urban district
  • Demonstrated achievement as an educational leader, including specific evidence of improvement in student learning as a result of the candidate's leadership
