Job Title: BESS Commissioning Manager

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced BESS Commissioning Manager to support the commissioning, startup, testing, and performance validation of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and solar-plus-storage facilities. Acting as the Owner's Representative, you will lead commissioning activities, ensure compliance with safety and operational standards, and coordinate with project teams, OEMs, SCADA integrators, utilities, and customers throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead commissioning, startup, and testing activities for utility-scale BESS and solar-coupled power systems.
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications, safety requirements, and commissioning procedures.
  • Support customer Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) testing and Grid Interconnection Agreement (GIA) testing with transmission operators.
  • Coordinate test energy forecasts and schedules with customers and stakeholders.
  • Partner with SCADA, ICCP, and IT teams to perform functional testing and system validation.
  • Develop and execute commissioning schedules based on mechanical completion milestones.
  • Conduct site acceptance testing (SAT) alongside SCADA integrators and project commissioning teams.
  • Support CEWIS Critical Point Checkout activities, including alarm verification and system checks.
  • Oversee OEM testing, plant balancing, capacity testing, and AVR/AGC support activities.
  • Analyze plant performance data, identify deficiencies, and drive corrective actions.
  • Provide technical leadership during troubleshooting of controls, SCADA, and power system issues.
  • Maintain detailed commissioning documentation, test reports, and project records.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), including installation, startup, and commissioning processes.
  • Experience developing and executing commissioning plans and procedures.
  • In-depth knowledge of containerized energy storage systems, transformers, combiners, controllers, and SCADA platforms.
  • Experience working with DC systems up to 2,000VDC and AC systems from 480V to 34.5kV.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting experience with control systems, SCADA systems, and power distribution equipment.
  • Strong organization, planning, and project coordination skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with customers, contractors, operations teams, and executive stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in electrical engineering, power systems, renewable energy, or electrical construction and startup.
  • Commissioning experience on utility-scale energy storage projects totaling at least 100 MWh or involvement with five or more BESS projects.
  • Direct utility-scale BESS commissioning experience is required.
  • Experience with SCADA integrations, controls, and grid-interactive systems is highly preferred.

Work Environment

This position is primarily remote, with approximately 25% travel to project sites across the United States to support commissioning, testing, startup, and performance validation activities. Candidates must be comfortable working in both office and field environments and be able to travel between project locations as needed. This role offers the opportunity to work on some of the industry"s most innovative energy storage and renewable energy projects.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $70.00 - $80.00/hr.
