Job Summary:
The Sr. BESS Project Engineer will support utility-scale Battery Energy Storage and renewable energy projects from development through construction and commissioning. The role focuses on reviewing engineering/design packages, providing QA/QC oversight, and overseeing the Engineer of Record (EOR) to ensure projects meet technical and quality requirements.
The engineer will work closely with EPCs, OEMs, consultants, utilities, and internal teams and should have a strong understanding of power systems, interconnection/POI, protection & controls, SCADA/EMS, and MV/HV electrical infrastructure.
Job Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
Review engineering and design packages for utility-scale BESS and renewable energy projects.
Oversee and challenge the Engineer of Record (EOR) to ensure designs meet project requirements.
Provide QA/QC oversight for engineering deliverables and project execution.
Review electrical designs related to power systems, MV/HV equipment, substations, and transmission.
Support interconnection and Point of Interconnection (POI) requirements.
Review and coordinate Protection & Controls (P&C), SCADA, and EMS integration.
Manage engineering activities from project development through construction and commissioning.
Coordinate with EPC contractors, OEMs, consultants, utilities, and internal stakeholders.
Identify technical issues, design gaps, risks, and required engineering changes.
Participate in technical meetings, design reviews, construction discussions, and commissioning activities.
Ensure engineering work complies with applicable IEEE, NEC, NFPA 855, UL 9540A, and utility requirements where applicable.

Qualifications
Must Have
Electrical Engineering degree (strong preference)
Experience reviewing engineering and design packages
Ability to challenge and oversee the Engineer of Record (EOR)
Provide QA/ QC oversight
Utility-scale project experience (BESS, solar, substations, transmission, generation)
Strong understanding of:
Power systems
Interconnection/POI
Protection and controls
SCADA/EMS integration
MV/HV electrical infrastructure
Experience managing projects from development through construction and commissioning
Comfortable leading discussions with EPCs, OEMs, consultants, utilities, and internal stakeholders
Nice to Have
Direct BESS experience
Familiarity with NFPA 855, UL9540A, IEEE, NEC
Renewable energy background
Not Required
P.E. License
Deep hands-on design work
Pure engineering consulting experience without project execution
